Chapter 9
I looked up at Jace who was watching his truck drive off, and I felt safe again. He peered down at me and his face turned from anger to pity.
“You alright?” He asked somberly. I nodded and he pulled me closer to him trying to keep me from getting anymore wet. The chills ran through my body and the previous encounter with my crazy ex only made me shiver and shake more.
As he walked back to the house he brought me inside and sat me on the chair in the kitchen. Ma was cooking dinner when she laid eyes on me and gasped. I was just as shocked as her at this point. Jace helped me take off my wet clothes and wrapped me up in a robe. I was so thankful to have such a caring brother.
Everything seemed to tune out at that point. I had gone into somewhat of a shock. All I wanted to do was go back in time and change what had just happened. I should have just politely turned him down instead of being so rash. I felt as though I had a reason to be like that though, I was not about to just give in to him and let him cheat on me again. He needs to realize that he can’t do that, and now he knows.
I let Ma clean me up, and as she tucked me into my bed she tried to talk to me and ask how everything happened but I simply shook my head. It wasn’t worth wasting my breath over. She understood and shut out the lights, leaving me to myself as I rolled onto my side facing the window that was covered by a piece of subtle pink cloth. The light from the moon was shining through the slit between the two pieces of cloth and was leaking into my room.
I tossed the bed sheets off my legs and got up. I walked over to the window and sat on the small couch cushion in the window seat. I opened the shades and looked out the window. The rain had stopped and the moon was shining bright over the watered land. The stars were up in the sky and I found myself getting lost in the beauty. I weakly smiled looking at the sky in all its brilliance and tried counting every star. Before I knew it I had fallen asleep counting stars and feeling blissful after one hell of a night.
*Brett’s POV*
Ma had alerted me that I had just missed the storm that passed through Nashville when I called her last night. I had called telling her I would leave at the crack of dawn from aunt Shay’s house in Dallas to drive back home. I pulled into town mid day and almost missed being here in this place. The people were kind and caring, the land was large, and the women were hot. There was nothing to complain about in this little town.
Women. I thought about Kennedy as I was passing her house on the main road. I decided to go pay her a little visit and made a U turn in the street, then pulled into her drive. I stepped out of the car and saw Jace, her older brother, in the tractor. He squinted from his seat on the machine and when he saw me he smiled and waved. I waved back and made my way to the front door of their house.
I knocked on the glass door twice and the face of Mrs. Monroe appeared behind the screen. “Hello darling, how are you?” She smiled brightly. She was a sweet woman, beautiful just like her daughter was, and she had this youth about her.
She sat me down in the kitchen, and like every great southern mother she started to feed me. I was fairly hungry judging by the fact that I last had a meal before the sun rose. I gladly took the food and ate it, letting my taste buds dance around my tongue, enjoying the many flavors.
“So what brings you to our home Brett?” Her kind voice asked as she sat across the table from me and poured a glass of sweet tea for both her and I. She was wearing a green apron over a yellow floor length sundress.
