Chapter 8
The breeze blew through my blonde hair as I sat and surveyed the view in front of me. This was my favorite spot on the land, everyone in my family knew that. When I was sad or angry, confused or worried, I would always be found right here in this very spot. Under the Sycamore tree on the top of a hill that gave you the most amazing view of the land. It was the best place to let your mind drift off and to be one with nature. I always feel wrapped up in the land when I sit here.
I moved my position from sitting to lying down on the blanket I had brought. I looked over my shoulder and saw Scout enjoying the high grass as he roamed around close by. Gazing back at the amazing view in front of me, I let myself remember seeing Lee last night. He still looked the same, brown almond eyes that paired deliciously with his chestnut colored hair. He had so much charm to his appearance. I think that’s what made me fall in love with him. He was so sweet and caring, always thinking about others in every situation and was prepared to do anything to protect me.
I missed him. I realized that I really missed him. Once I remembered what he did to me, I realized that I didn’t miss him exactly; I missed sharing my life with someone. Having that person there for you and knowing what is happening in your life. Companionship. That is what I missed the most. Yet even when I was with him and he would tell me he was busy at night when really he would go out with Stacy, I still loved him. I was blinded by this nonexistent love that I didn’t even realize what he was doing behind my back until after the fact.
A loud rumbling sounded throughout the hills. I looked up and saw the storm clouds gathering in the sky, the darkness was starting to cover up the light that was shining on the land. I reluctantly got up, preparing to bring Scout back to the barn so that he could be safe from this summer storm. I folded up my blanket and rested it on my lap once I was sat on the saddle. Grabbing the reigns I brought Scout to a trot and we both made our way back to the barn.
Before I knew it, the sun had been covered up completely and the thunder sounded louder and louder. I looked back behind me and saw the rain already started coming down in the distance, so I picked up the speed. Scout raced across the field, passing through the high grass that slid past my boots. We swiveled through a patch of trees, avoiding the trunks and continuing on. I was amazed at how fast Scout was going; he had to have trained really well, he knows how to run.
I momentarily thought of Brett, wondering how he was. The last time I saw him was the day after the party, when I went over to his place to apologize and thank him for caring for me in my drunken state. How embarrassing, I thought to myself, what a total embarrassment I must’ve been. He probably thinks of me as an immature child, no wonder that is the last time that we’ve talked.
Nonetheless, he was pretty amazing that night at the party. I never knew he could dance the way he did. The way he whispered in my ear and grabbed my hips firmly made my heart race. He really knew what he was doing, which made me think that he has had a lot of practice. I could only imagine judging by his rugged good looks and his easy composure.
I shook my head and focused back in on where I was, trying to out run this storm. I guided Scout loosely in the direction of the barn, knowing he’s probably got a good idea of the land now and can make it there himself. Once the barn was in the distance, I looked back again and saw the clouds, which seemed even darker now. Scout pressed on, sensing my anxiety.
Some horses get really freaked out when there is thunder and lightning storms and I didn’t know how Scout would react to all this so I wanted to get him to the barn as soon as possible. He was nervous by the awkward out of rhythm strides he would take every few minutes, but we kept going. Finally we made it to the barn and I rode into it with Scout. I hoped off and secured him into his stable, letting out a huge sigh. What a rush that was!
