-- Soulmate AU: A timer is on your wrist, counting down the moments until you meet your soulmate.

Michael and Jeremy sat together before class, Michael watching his long legs swing back and forth with amusement in his eyes. Jer' always did that if he was excited; he couldn't ever sit still if something was making him buzz.

"I'm meeting her today, Michael!" Jeremy said, his blue eyes breifly meeting with Michael's, shimmering brightly. Then his head quickly lowered, checking the timer on his wrist.

"At lunch, I think," Michael responded with a chuckle, flashing a just-as-excited grin.

Jeremy let out a squeak. "What do you think she'll look like?" He asked, talking quick and bubbling with enthusiasm. "What do you think she'll be like? Do you think she'll like video games? Or animals? Or, or--!"

Michael cut him off with a small laugh, reassuringly putting his hand on Jeremy's shoulder. "I'm sure she'll be perfect for you, Jer-Bear," he said with a smile. "She's your soulmate, after all."

The taller boy sighed for a moment, nodding his head quickly. "I just can't wait," he murmured, his expression softening as he pictured his soulmate-to-be.

Michael tried to ignore the ache in his chest as the bell rung, signalling the start of class.

---

It was now noon; Jeremy and Michael's lunch period. Jeremy's face was flushed, his nerves beginning to kick in. But his eyes didn't lose their excited glimmer as they remained locked on his wrist.

"Eight minutes," he breathed, looking up to Michael. "H-How do I look?"

"You look fine, Jer'," Michael responded with a smile, as he looked over the boy's locks of curly, cinnamon-brown hair and freckles scattered on his face like stars. He was wearing a light blue Pokemon shirt with jeans. It was geeky, but he looked adorable.

"Six minutes!" Jeremy's squeak brought him back from his thoughts. "I-I gotta go!"

"Good luck! You've got this."

He watched Jeremy scramble to a seat and sit down, frantically checking his timer every few seconds. He found an empty spot a few tables away, putting up his hood and resting his head on his hand.

Finally, Jeremy shot up as a tall girl wearing a dorky Pikachu shirt walked into the cafeteria. His mouth parted slightly in awe, glancing at his wrist.

That had to be his soulmate. Michael watched as Jeremy's mouth twitched into a dorky grin as the girl walked up to her.

He couldn't like; the girl was cute. She had tannish skin and curly, dark hair. She wore dark blue glasses that made her gray-ish blue eyes bright. Geez, no wonder he couldn't compare to that...

Michael's heart ached, his eyes stinging as tears pricked them. He couldn't hide the pain anymore, watching Jeremy lift up his wrist and his soulmate hold up hers. Their timers had no doubt reached zero.

Michael burried his head in his arms, trying to muffle the pained sob that broke from his throat. His shoulders shook with shaky breaths, unable to look back at his best friend.

Warm tears fell onto the table, falling from his cheeks. He slowly lifted his head, barely able to see from the tears blurring his sight.

Slightly, he pulled up his sleeve to look at his own timer. It displayed the same number it had always, ever since he was a kid; zero.

It had always been at zero.
