"What?" I laughed.
"Hazel, please-" he started.
"No, what? There's no way- I mean...you're crazy," I stood and began to pace.
"I'm telling the truth and you know it." He said bluntly.
"Do I? I haven't been informed of that." I replied, not quite believing my ears.
"Think about it. You recognised me. Somewhere, something deep inside you remembered me. I saw it in your eyes the first time I saw you. I was so hoping you'd see my face and..." he swallowed hard, tears in his eyes."Thomas, I...I don't know." I tried not to believe him, it was crazy...but part of it made sense.
"How did it happen though?" I asked, sitting down to try and comprehend what I was hearing."Well...believe it or not, we were together. Like...together-together. I was planning a proposal, actually." He smiled warmly at the thought.
"But...Elle, she was always trying to get between us. At first I thought she didn't like me, but it turns out she did. Too much."So one day, when I was home alone waiting for you to come home from a long holiday, she turned up instead of you, and..." he paused.
"What, Thomas?" I whispered.
"She kissed me." He said and chewed his cheek.
"No, Elle wouldn't...she would never-"
"But she did. Just before you came in. You saw it wrong, you thought I kissed her. That's what she told you."
"But I don't understand-"
"So you ran away, crying, cursing, she ran after you saying how I attacked her."
"No, that can't be right, Elle's my best fr-"
"You ran into the street and was hit by a speeding motorbike. You were pronounced dead on site." He continued, ignoring my interruptions.
"But you lived. Thank God, you lived. But you forgot everyone. Everything you'd ever known, wiped from your mind.""But...I remember everyone else. I don't remember the accident, I don't remember hospital..." I tried to make sense.
"That's because, a week after you'd been discharged home, you woke up and you were fine. Everything was back to normal. Well, everything accept from me and that whole ordeal." He finished."Thomas...this is a lot to take in." I said quietly.
"I know, but please you need to believe me. I've missed you so much, Hazel. God, what I wouldn't give for you to remember me. But Elle kept me away, she feared that if you remembered what happened, you wouldn't be friends anymore. She worried that you'd find out who she really is. So, she told everyone you know to keep me out, to shut any memory of me away." He said, hatred for Elle seeping through his words.
"I...I need to talk to Elle about this-"
"No, she'll lie to you-"
"How do I know you're not lying to me?!" I shouted, standing suddenly."I know how I can get you to remember. But I need you to trust me." He stood too.
"How?" I said, trying to sound angry."Come to my place, and just...look. Smell. Use your senses and see if anything inside you screams out. Please, Hazel. I need to know if I can get you to remember." He pleaded.
"...Okay." I said after a long deciding sigh.
"Hazel?!" A shadowy figure said, standing just at the doorway.
"Elle..." I said quietly.
"Thomas? What the fuck are you doing here? Get away from her!" She started, walking purposefully toward us.
"No Elle. Stop." I stepped in front of Thomas."What? What did he tell you? Hazel, you can't believe him seriously!" She laughed, seeming to know exactly what he'd told me.
"Eleanor, you know the truth. Now she does too. It's time to own up for your mistakes." Thomas said.
"No! You flirted with me and tried to seduce me!" Elle defended.
"What do you mean? I tried to win you over because you acted like you hated me? Yeah, I did. I was nice. Decent. Kind. So you thought I would choose you over Hazel. I loved her so much and you ruined it because you couldn't bloody help yourself!" He yelled.
"For God's sake, the two of you!" I cried.
"Hazel-" the two said in unison."No! The two of you, get out," I pointed to the door.
"For fuck's sake!" Elle said, storming out.
"Hazel...just think about it. Come over to our place, where we lived, and just see if you can remember. If you don't, I'll leave you alone forever. I promise." He said before giving me a kiss on the forehead and leaving, closing the door behind him.
I sat on the couch defeated and conflicted.
Who do I believe? Thomas? Elle?My phone buzzed suddenly from in the kitchen.
-Hazel, he's crazy. That's why I'm keeping you safely away from him. He kissed me, it's his fault you almost died.
Elle I don't know. Please just let me think.
-Ok. Please don't believe him, you're my best friend x
I left it there, lying down on the sofa and closing my eyes. Who do I believe? My best friend, or my supposed lover from another lifetime?
