As we sat at our desks, I couldn't help but notice how saddened he looked. A low, exhausted energy radiated from him.

"That was really impressive," I stated, deciding to make an attempt at cheering him up. He sent a dismissive glance my way, but continued to ignore me and return his focus to whatever was on his monitor.
"Are..." I started after a short silence, "...you okay-"

"Can you piss off? Jesus Christ!" He snapped defensively. I turned back to my own monitor, retreating back within myself. A wave of embarrassment cloaked me like a suffocating blanket. The lieutenant sighed in frustration at his own outburst, but before he could even attempt to apologise, another one of my new colleagues came over.

"Lieutenant! That wasn't very nice of you," He sneered, cup of hot coffee in hand.

"Fuck off, Reed." He hissed. not even making eye contact.

"Ooh, shit! Sorry!" Reed jeered sarcastically, "I was just trying to say that you might wanna try being a bit nicer to our lovely new detective,"

I looked up at him, ready to thank him, but the look in his eyes freaked me out. It was as if he was undressing me just my looking at me, gaze drifting over my figure.

"Oh, come off it." Sangster warned.

"Why? Have you already claimed her? Is she..." He leaned closer to him, "Yours?"

Thomas didn't like this. He sprung up and pushed Reed against the divider by his neck, his coffee spilling on the cheap blue carpet.

"Why can't you just shut the fuck up?" He threatened, anger bubbling up and finally spilling over. Reed clearly tried to come across as amused, but the unmistakable panic in his eyes and whitening of his knuckles around Thomas' forearm suggested otherwise.

"What the hell are you doing?!" I yelled, unsure exactly what to do in such a situation.

For a few seconds, the Lieutenant's gaze bore holes into the pits of Reed's brain, peering directly into his soul as his jaw tightened. As if he were contemplating whether beating him to death in the middle of a police precinct would be worth it the satisfaction.

"I could empty this fucking clip in your skull, you know."

Thankfully, he decided he should not. Releasing his grip on Reed's throat, he turned around and drew a deep breath. Even I could tell it took a hell of a lot of self restraint.

"You three, my office," Captain Daniels' authoritative voice grabbed our attention, "Now."

Thomas reluctantly made his way to the office, Reed and I reluctantly in tow.

Daniels sat at his desk whilst the we stood before him, calculating stare flitting between us.

"Do you know what it took for me to get where I am today?" He started, "Back when I joined the police force, a black captain was unheard of. When people got wind of my ambitions they teased and ridiculed me every single day. Yet, I never indulged them."

I could see where this was going.

"And you decide that someone teasing you is grounds to attack them?" He said, sounding very disappointed.

"Captain, he wasn't teasing me, he was harassing Anderson-"

"Irrelevant!" He snapped, "I'm sure she doesn't need you to stand up for her. Anyway - just this morning you wanted nothing to do with her, yet now you're attacking a colleague for looking at her. Make your mind up, Thomas."

"You're right," He gave in, "I'm sorry. It won't happen again. Today's case was just...hard on me."

"Okay. I understand," Captain's voice lost its edge, but remained authoritative, "Just control your anger from now on. And
you..." He glared at detective Reed, "Watch it. Don't be a sleaze,"
