"Never again, Soph." I laughed as we left. Fireworks scattered the open field.
"Oh, come on Em, just one more?" She pleaded, her voice a little slurred from the drink.
"No. Nope. Nurp. Never. Again. This is the second year in a row I've been disappointed by new year's, and I don't think I can go through that again." I finished. New year's had been a disaster two years in a row now, people of been set up with annoyingly too good for me or annoyingly not the way she described them. I didn't want to go to another party, I only ever got sadness from them.__________________________

One Year Later...
"So...about that party-..." Sophie began, creeping into the living room.
"No." I replied bluntly.
"Oh, puh-lease! Just come with me one more time, I'll try my best to find you someone better this time!" She whimpered, crashing onto the sofa next to me. I lifted my chin up snidely.
"Fine. Spend it alone, without me...alone," She taunted, "and so sad. So, so sad. I mean, anyway, you don't even need a guy. Just have fun!!" She rambled on.
"Listen, Soph, I don't kno-.."
"And we can leave whenever you want to, it's only like thirty minutes away!" She continues to reason.
"Arghhhh...." I huffed, giving in.
"Oh, Emilia, you'll not regret this," she finished and ran into the kitchen.
"Pre drinks?"______________
At the party...
We walked into the huge Manor House, it's grand walls gleaming with fairy lights. We stood around chatting for a few minutes, until a tall guy with brown hair came and started talking to Sophie. I didn't mind that much, she was here to meet someone."Do you mind if I...?" She asked after he'd offered to go get some drinks for the two.
"Sophie, go. Really, have a nice time." I told her, making sure she wouldn't feel bad for leaving me alone in this party. Her and this guy were hitting it off, I didn't want to ruin it.
"Really? Oh my God, you're the best! I'll see you tomorrow," she winked and scurried off with her soon-to-be husband.
I floated around the crowded venue for a while, just exploring the bustling Manor House.
11:57pm
Time was running out, and it was soon to be my third single and new-year's-kiss-less year. I huffed and finished my champagne, placing the glass on a table and walking out onto a balcony overlooking a field. I looked at my watch,
11:59pm
The distant sound of counting down made my heart sink. I don't know why I thought this year would be different.
10
Yet part of me still wanted something.
9
Even though I knew it wasn't possible.
8
Even though it was too late.
7
Maybe next year.
6
Maybe I'd get lucky.
5
Meet the love of my life?
4
No. That's silly.
3
I just wanted something to remember.
2
Something.
1.My lips met his as I turned away from the bright fireworks, the sounds not nearly as loud as my beating heart. The faint taste of champagne and liquor brushed against my bottom lip as the sky set alight.
Cheers in the background, then his lips disconnected.
My blue eyes fluttered open to meet his dark ones. I couldn't form words properly, thankfully I didn't need to.
"Happy New Year," he said, a his expression almost blank.
"Uh..." I stuttered, not sure exactly where to start.
