Dusk settled upon Paleclan, most cats finally waking up to be harvested by the beautiful and silence of the night.

A soft pelted apprentice was resting peacefully in the medicine cat den. He has every right to after all, he was being trained to become the next one.

The apprentice's slumber was interrupted when a paw poked right into his stomach. Halfpaw, mainly known for being adopted by the clan's leader, stirred and made a sound only dead cats could understand.

"Halfpaw. I wont ask you again. Get up now!" A voice snapped viciously at him.

Due to the venom that leaked out of those words, he quickly forced his body to wake up. Trying to not say anything as he listened and tried to move.
It was a bit of a failure however, because Halfpaw could barely see as he blinked and blinked.

"What time is it?"

"It's time for you to get up and get working. Your fox-dung of a father wants you up early." After his vision cleared, his soft blue eyes caught sight of his mentor, Mousebranch.

She seemed irritated, then again, she always was. Halfpaw didn't care however, so he smiled lazily and stretched, his back making a weird sound and he felt more relaxed. Until his mentor nosed him out the den, snarling. "I said to get going! Your father wants you mousebrain!"

Confused and still drowsy, the young apprentice turned to look at his mentor. But she sent him a death glare, and he knew what that meant. So he could only sigh and follow the she-cat's instructions like he did everyday. Though the cream colored tom tried to remain positive, waking up earlier then some other apprentices was always swell!

Camp was just now coming alive, he easily noticed, as warriors slipped out of their dens and others would stir in their sleep. Halfpaw passed by some warriors and the nursery on his way to his father. I wonder if Magpiepaw is awake yet?

His best friend. Actually, just at the thought of the she-cat his heart pumped happily. Magpiepaw, his big sister, and best friend.

---

"You're so nice Halfpaw! I bet you have a lot of friends!"

At the words he grinned, "Actually, I don't have a lot of friends.." Suddenly he felt weird, as he dug his paw in the dirt. "I have one though! And she's my best friend!"

---

With a swift glace to the den where the apprentice's slept, he realized she wasn't awake yet probably. He could almost make out her nest, and someone seemed to be in it.

Being distracted, he didn't realize an obstacle had come into his road. Halfpaw turned his head back forward, but not in time to avoid the huge cat in his path.

"Oof!"

His small frame collided with a large one, and as he opened his eyes again he saw a coat of black.

"Watch it," A voice sneered, one so menacing that the cream furred apprentice couldn't help but shiver and scramble away quickly.

Sky blue eyes glanced up and he realized with a jolt it was Slashface he had ran into. Almost like he was programmed to, apologized flew like sparrows out of his jaws.

"Im so so sorry! I just didn't see you there! I should definitely be more careful next time, oh, im so sorry!"

Despite his polite manner, the senior warrior just look disgusted and angry at him anyways. Halfpaw knew he was the father of two other apprentices, Chickadeepaw and Opossumpaw. If he was honest, which he always tried to be, Slashface's kits were always a bit mean.

Lost in thought, he barely caught the threat Slashface uttered. "Listen you-"

"Halfpaw! Here now!"

Saved by the leader, Halfpaw smiled, as he tilted his head to the side. In his vision that wasn't tainted by black fur, he caught the figure of his ginger furred father. It was also easy to spot him due to the other's burn marks.

Slashface had jerked his head in that direction too, but before he could look back at him, Halfpaw raced away. Almost tripping over himself as his small body bounded across the camp to reach Burntstar.

"See you Slashface!" He commented cheerfully, glancing back a bit before he turned his head forward again.

However his father seemed irritated too, with his narrowed green eyes and stiff posture.

---

Halfkit let out a wail as he watched with horror as a lifeless body fell to the floor. He cried and cried, watching the red pour out of open sections on the cat's body.

However, he was crying for his father, Burntstar. He felt bad that he had to kill one of his warriors like that. That was horrible. Horrible horrible and wrong.

"D-d-dad-"

"Quiet Halfkit. Im sorry you had to see that." Burntstar almost looked sad for him too. But it didn't reach his firgure. His figure was stiff, not slump.

"Its...its-" Another hicup and wheeze, "O-okay-"

---

Whatever his father wanted to talk to him about, probably wouldn't be good.

Though, his mind whispered to him it would always be sunny, so he smiled brightly and trotted forward. Eager for a new night to begin, and for him to be one step closer to being a full medicine cat.
