Once Eric left for his trip, Kaycee found it hard to concentrate on what she was doing.
She found herself staring out the window while she poured herself coffee or she'd stumble over words if her eyes ran across something that reminded her of the man.
Finally getting to work was a bit of a challenge but the women working there made her buckle down to prove them wrong and show them she belonged there just as much as any of them.
"Sara's going to fire someone. She's in a crap mood today so don't mess up or get in her way," a nice redhead spoke up as she sat down at the table with Kaycee after pouring herself some coffee and fishing out two strawberry danishes for the both of them. "Ellen from H.R. is not in the mood for paperwork either so if you want to make friends, start with her. She'll make sure you don't get fired when you're in deep shit."
"Thanks?"
"Don't thank me yet. I'm just watching out for the new girls because I know that other girls love to see you all fail and it should be like that, but it is. I'm Nia, by the way."
"Nia, I'm Kadence but everyone I know calls me Kaycee."
"So how did you get a job under Sara? You must like being inflicted with pain and abuse?", Nia teased sipping her coffee while Kaycee picked at the danish just because it had a nice drizzling of icing.
"I just need the money. I'm working two jobs so I can get my own place and stuff."
The young blonde drank her coffee as she watched the clock ticking on the wall.
"Oh, wow. Now I definitely want you to stay on with us. Most girls are here to see how far they can make it to the top without actually doing any work if you catch my drift. How old are you?"
Kaycee didn't really feel comfortable knowing she was the youngest girl here and most people saw that as competition. All she wanted to do was collect her paycheck to be able to afford a place of her own and a car that she could call her own and say she got it all by herself.
"Twenty one," she lied.
"Lucky you. Best days ever! I'm 25 and not legally married but my boyfriend seems to think we are. I saw the ring on your finger your first day. Why aren't you wearing it today?", Nia's conversation became to much and Kaycee needed to get away before she rambled about Eric and that led to daydreaming about him.
"Can we talk some other time? I have to end my break in a few."
"Okay. Talk to you later, Kaycee."
She finished her work promptly even earning a small smile from Sara, her boss, and she called home to make sure that the cooks knew what she wanted to eat for the night and to send them and all the other workers home for the rest of the night.
Kaycee poured herself a glass of wine and slowly ate her food which was the chef's extremely cheesy and delicious lasagna, chef's salad, and garlic bread. When she finished, she cleaned her dishes and went to her room to take a quick shower.
"Mr. Davidson will not give up," Jane, the maid winked at Kayce as the girl entered her room to find roses everywhere and gift boxes from Chanel, Prada, Louis Vuitton and more.
She rolled her eyes at the extravagant gifts and made a mental note to buy him something meaningful, maybe even something he didn't know he needed until someone gave it to him.
"Thank you for staying Jane, but really you can go home for the rest of the night."
"Just waiting for you, Miss. Mr. Eric wanted me to make sure you got in safely."
"Thank you. Have a nice night," she hugged the maid before letting her take her leave.
There really was nothing this man had not thought of. He had car services to take her to and from work, had breakfast spreads prepared with everything she could ever want, and texted her smiley face emojis that actually made her in turn smile.
"I'm in bed now. What are you doing?", she asked as she finally called him despite her rule not to talk to him until he returned.
She laughed as he reciprocated with a really corny joke.
They probably talked on the phone for two hours before she fell asleep from exhaustion. He listened to her light snores and didn't bother her as she slept.
