Episode: Season 5 - Dark Side of the Moon Pt. 2
When I finally came to, I was sitting in the dark in the passenger seat of the Impala by Dean. Rubbing the sleep from my eyes in an attempt to wake myself up, I glanced over at Dean who was also waking up. His green eyes were bleary and tired but otherwise, he looked fine. The radio played softly in the background - Knockin' On Heaven's Door - and I smiled at the lyrics. I always did love this song... Although maybe that was just because I heard it on Containment, I thought to myself with a shrug.
A roll of thunder sounded overhead and I noticed with a smile that Dean was wearing his brown leather jacket - the one I loved so much. Slowly, we both got out of the car and I leaned against the side of it, glancing ahead at the endless road before us.
"Dean? What's going on? How did we get here?" I asked suddenly, furrowing my eyebrows in confusion.
But before he could answer my question, we heard footsteps behind and turning saw a shocking but familiar face. It was Sam...but not Sam. Or at least, not Sam how we knew him. This Sam was young - about 12 years old. His face didn't hold the worries that older Sam did. He looked...carefree, happy.
" Sammy?" Dean asked cautiously.
Baby Sam smiled at him, holding a tray of what looked to be fireworks in his hands.
"Come on. Let's go!" he told us both cheerily, racing off into the woods.
Dean and I shared a look.
"Weird dream," I muttered and Dean nodded in agreement, arching his eyebrows briefly as we followed Baby Sam.
Sam plonked the tray down with the fireworks in the grass before turning to glance up at Dean.
"Got your lighter?" he asked him.
Dean frowned slightly before digging in his jacket pocket and pulling out an old, used lighter, "Whoa. I haven't seen this in years!"
Slowly, Dean lit the fuse on the firework he and Sammy held before passing one to me. He lit it and before we knew it, all of our fireworks were going off, lighting up the night sky with bright colors of pink, orange, and yellow.
Dean grinned then, watching them burst loudly in the air, "I remember this. This is Fourth of July, 1996!"
I started to laugh, shaking my head, "No way! I remember it, too,"
"Dad would never let us do anything like this. Thanks, Dean! This is great," little Sam told Dean, beaming up at his big brother.
I smiled at the two of them as Sam crushed Dean in a hug, his skinny arms wrapping around his waist. We must have spent half an hour just lighting fireworks after that, all of us screaming and laughing as we let them go off. They shot up into the air with burst of color and I grinned as I watched them. My eyes landed on Dean then and I'd never seen him look so carefree - like nothing could touch him. And it made me happier than anything. He glanced down at me then, just as fireworks went off and it lit up his face with blue and green hues, making me smile.
Suddenly, just as another set of fireworks went off, my mind zapped back to an hour ago - the gun shots, the blood, Sam, Dean, and I.... And in the blink of an eye, I was snapped back to reality. I glanced to Dean and the happiness had left his face, replaced by the serious expression he normally wore. All was quiet now - Sam, the fireworks - all of it was just gone. After that, we headed back to the Impala when suddenly, the radio hummed to life without either of us touching it.
"Dean..." it spoke and we both jumped, startled.
"Cas?" Dean asked cautiusly.
"Yeah, it's me," the voice spoke again and I rolled my eyes as we climbed into the Impala.
