Chapter 2 | Heaven On Earth
The time passed by slowly after lunch; mainly after English. My mind wouldn't let me forget that as soon as the bell rang, I was not set free. No, instead, I would be trapped here even longer than I need to be.
The bell rings at 3:15, signaling to all the other student that their day is done and that mine is only halfway there.
I quickly make my way to the door marked 'DETENTION' and walk in. The faster I get in, the faster it's over. I look around and see barely anyone. I mean it is the first day of school, I guess even your usual delinquents have standards. There's a boy, probably a freshman from the looks of him, and another similar looking boy, both badly bruised. Of course, a fight would happen on the first day, what did I expect? Other than them there's no one here.
I grab the worksheet from the front and sit all the way in the back to work on the paper. I get it done in about 10 minutes and decide to pull out my books to do my homework. Halfway through I notice something's off.
Where's Elijah? He's the cause of my detention yet he's not here. I look around the classroom but he's nowhere to be seen, where could he -- ugh speak of the devil. Elijah walks in, smug as ever, and strolls towards the back.
Please don't sit next to me.
God, please don't sit next to me.
Please don't sit next to -- I guess there is no God.
Elijah sits down next to me and gives me a smile. "Miss me?"
"Not one bit," I say going back to my work. I complete the simple warm-up algebra equations on the paper, nothing but silence in the room. A couple of minutes go by before my paper is snatched away from me.
"What are you working on?" He examines my paper before looking at me in shock, "Homework? It's the first day."
I grab my paper back from him, "These are practice questions." I pause for a moment realizing what I just said, "I'm such a nerd, aren't I?"
He smiles. "C'mon." He says getting up.
"What? Where are you going?" I ask. "There's still an hour left before we can leave."
"I owe you. I got you in here so, now I'm getting you out."
"What about the teacher?" I point towards the front desk that's currently occupied by the sleeping teacher. I swear this school's staff could not be worse.
"He won't miss us, he's sleeping. Now let's go." He grabs my bag and put my papers inside then starts walking out. "You coming?" He says looking back at me.
I glance at the teacher then the door. Oh, fuck it.
I get up and follow Elijah out the door before he turns around to look at the two boys, he puts his finger up to his lips before closing the door behind him. "You want a ride home?"
I nod my head 'yes' and we head out into the hallway when my phone rings, I open it and see whos calling.
"Oh sugar, It's my mom."
I answer the phone and hear my mom's voice,
"Alora? Where are you?" My mother greeted, her voice soft and kind as always but with concern laced in between each word.
"Hi mom, sorry. I completely forgot to call you." I said, my mind already beginning to prepare itself for the chew out I was about to get from her when she found out why I wasn't home.
"What do you mean, forgot to call me?" She responded.
"I got detention today during English, it's not my fault though. The kid next to me wouldn't stop talking. I only got caught in the crossfire, I swear."
