Bathing Suits and My Crush on Nelson

“I’m NOT wearing that.”

Maybe it slipped my mind that beach houses are in fact on the beach and thus very very close to water, which means swimming, which also means clothing for swimming.

But I’m looking at the one piece bathing suit that’s just as bad, maybe worse than a bikini. The fabric is porous just like every other bathing suit on the rack, but it’s not as modest bathing suit. It has a large opening on the sides that begins from the abdomen all the way to the back. The only thing that keeps it from being called a bikini is the curving rectangle of fabric sewed to the bottom and sewed around the gold plated ring that connects the two cups of the bra as well. And it’s purple, my favorite color, but that doesn’t matter because it’s naked.

So

Much

Skin

“Hell no.”

Claire rolls her eyes, “You have to pick something, how are you going to swim with no bathing suit?”

She’s right, I slowly uncross my arms and give the rack of swim wear a falling glare. We’ve been through it twice and nothing seems covering enough, it’s all exposed and with these thighs and these hips that’s a no go. Not to mention it’s been awhile since I’ve worn a bathing suit.

My eyes gloss over the colors; blues, reds, flamingos (lmao), tankini’s bikinis, and one pieces. Claire fiddles with her hands nervously as her eyes dart towards the entrance of Wal-Mart. The place is packed as usual with laughing teens with nothing else to do but moonlight Wal-Mart. Then there are hot guys, who every now and again give us a considering look before walking past, only to look over their shoulders again for a last peek.

She’s watching the door like Nikki or Ashley are going to storm in at any minute and wreak havoc. I could understand why though, we’ve been standing in the same spot for thirty minutes. Me biting the bottom the bottom and my lips and Claire wringing her hands nervously.

It’s just so hard to admit that not everything looks good on you. I won’t lie, I’m not a skinny girl, in the least though Daddy and mama used to tell me that all time. Compared to Ashley I’m a whale, my waist is not a size 29, it’s more like a size 33 or something…hell I don’t know. I’m the fat twin, and she’s the skinny one. I hate to sulk about my weight, about the fact that no matter how much I lose I will retain the same pear shape that mama had, the same one that seemed to skip over Ashley by a couple of pounds and lay on me.

I feel so……out of place.

“Maybe I won’t get in the water.” I mumble to myself as I finger the bathing suit again.

I have to admit that I like the way it looks. Yeah I know, I was just hollering about it being naked, but I like it. I like the boldness of it, the skin out there for the world to see. A girl wearing it would have to be confident and that’s something I lack.

“You ok Ash?” I don’t turn my head to the side, I keep it on the cool purple fabric as Claires hand rests on my shoulder and she moves closer, “we can look for another one if you want.”

“I’m too….fat.”

There I said it. I’m too fat for a bathing suit.

“Are you serious?”

Her tone it’s like a mixture of confusion and agitation, and it makes me hang my head a little bit more. It’s hard to admit that I’m insecure, but I have my moments, so many moments. And I…but I…I just don’t want Nelson to know, anybody can know except him.

Except him.

“Ashanti, I am not about to play with you. Do you see those hips? Killer. Have you seen my cousin drool? Horrible.”
