Stupid Jerk…..what kick does he get out of kidnapping me in the middle of the night and dragging me to his car with his batman cape over his shoulder? Over the last four weeks I’ve known this guy I can clearly identify it as normal Nelson behavior.
“So…..” the cool metal makes my fingers tingle as I buckle the seat belt and scrunch my face up in confusion at Nelson, “what’s the purpose of this…..abduction?”
Underneath the overhead light attached to the ceiling of his car he grins. The fake diamond studs in his ear glimmers to match his smile, dazzling to the world. My heart beats slowly as his smile falters and a more sober smile replaces it, his eyes dim, “What have you always wanted to do?”
The sound of laughter bounces in the car, off the steering wheel, off the side of his freshly shaven cheeks and off the seats that badly need some decent cleaning with a vacuum. He squints, the smile on his face wavers, falters and then slips away, just as his eyebrows lower and compress into a unibrow.
Is he….serious?
I press a sweaty palm against my mouth to prevent more laughter from leaving my gate and turn a little bit more towards him. The laughter has left, but a twitch of a smile is still there as I press my back against the door handle of the car, “You’re serious?”
“Yeah…I think I am.” Sarcasm drops from his tongue like an small drop of paint and splatters all around us. Is that anger?
Why is he mad?
Is he?
His face is the same, stoic and somber. He’s serious, there’s no smile, there’s no laughter, it’s just him. Just him, naked, bare.
“Ummm,” my eyes drift away from his and they land on his jeans, dark and frayed around the bottoms where they have dragged over concrete too many times and wore away from stress. I bite my lip and think of something to say. What have I always wanted to do? Live, breathe, and die. But I know that’s not the answer he’s looking for, he wants something real, something tangible and I don’t know so I tell him, “ I don’t know.”
“Let’s find out.”

“The Never Ending Bucket List?”
The hastily scrawled words at the top of the crumpled white paper run into each other as if to prove how never ending it truly is.
“Yeah.” He leans against the front of his car and readies his pen to commence writing said bucket list while I cock my head to the side and wonder ‘what’s really going on?’
Surprisingly its slightly cool out tonight, gone is the usual smell of burning nature and in its place is a scent so soothing to the senses that it almost lulls you into a peaceful trance. I would be in that trance if I wasn’t trying to understand why we are outside in front of a park writing a bucket list under a cigarette lighter.Thermal heat brushes against my nose as I lean closer so that he can see, I keep my thumb jammed on the black lever and hope that he’ll be through soon. As much as I enjoy heat, holding it in my hand isn’t necessarily ideal.
“But……we’re not dying.”
Or at least I hope I’m not dying, who knows I might have some type of cancer that you can’t detect until its too late. Maybe I have an HIV from swapping saliva with Jared, the ways to die are endless.
I don’t want to die! I’m too young!
“Nah, not that kinda list Tee.” His cool bare arm touches mine for a moment as I lean forward to see what he’s writing, with yet another smile he slides the paper to the side and hides it with his arm, “….its just for the summer.” He finishes with the hint of a smile.
