Aftermath is….a bitch.
Miscalculations…
Playing with fire…a little too soon.
All coupled with the fact that I spent the night hiding out in me and Ashley’s shared room pretending to be asleep so I didn’t have to talk to Nelson. So I didn’t have to explain why I pulled away from him and hightailed it back to the beach house like a little wussy.
Even though it’s hot I sink deeper into the bed and make sure the blanket is tucked all around me. The only thing I can see is the morning light trying to enter the orange and red flower blanket that envelopes me, but I hear laughter. Soft tinkling outside the room and then Ashley’s raucous voice as she describes how many guys she pulled in one night.
“Hella fine, every one of them, but yall know I got a man,”
My eye’s roll automatically.
Like anybody cares….except her.
“Is uh,” my ears perk up at the voice, the jilted words and the strain so evident in his words, “Ashanti up?”
Silence, so much silence that it’s loud and I have to clamp my hands against my ears to keep him from hearing it. I’m going crazy again, I’m squeezing my eyes so hard and I’m hoping that he forgets I’m even alive for a few days, for just a few days. Forget about me.
“I don’t know, when I woke up two hours ago she was still asleep,” Ashley answers.
Two hours ago?
“But it’s 12 now.”
“I guess she’s tired, but you can go and see if she’s up.”
Oh no, oh no, oh no. Damn you Ashley.
I still myself quickly as I hear his footsteps, bare feet, softly, slowly moving and then the doorknob turning, turning.
“Ashanti?”
I clamp my mouth shut and close my eyes and try to think of things that dead people do. Oh yeah…nothing.
Heat, I feel even more heat closer and I know I just know that he’s right in front of my face, on his knees with his arms pressed into the mattress for support as he stares at my still mummified form, “Damn, is there an igloo in there or something?”
I roll my eyes again.
Nervous laughter is accompanied with coughing, “That’s stupid aint it?”
I have to keep myself from nodding my head, because I would nod the hell out of it if I could.
“Ashanti, you awake under there?”
Nope, go away.
“I have something to tell you.”
Please no more confessions.
Heat, more heat and I feel his nose pressing through the comforter, a dark shadow really since I made a point to back away before he came in, “I see dead people.”
Oh yeah, he’s a moron.
“No, but really,” he shifts closer and I’m almost afraid he’s going to lift the blanket and find me out but instead he moves closer, throws one arm around my supposed sleeping form and moves his forehead until it touches mine through the blanket, “I don’t know if you’re awake, if you’re pretending to be asleep or something, but maybe if you’re asleep you can hear what I have to say?”
Now is the moment I’m supposed to pop up and say “I’m up! I’m up!” but that requires speaking and I haven’t brushed my teeth, or taken a shower and I know I smell because I smell myself and it’s not a good feeling. I blame the heat, the heat made me sweat up a smell and now I can’t do anything without taking a shower. Oi..or maybe I just think too much.
“I’m sorry if I made you feel pressured or anything, I aint the kinda guy to do that ya know? I just thought,” he stops short and laughs to himself, “that you felt the same way and I thought ‘man it’s time to tell her, it’s time’ and I couldn’t wait another long ass minute to tell you that. And this is going to sound corny, but when you smile or give me that dazed expression like you’re out of it I think ‘man, this girl doesn’t know how beautiful she is, or how funny she is or what she does to me’.”
Wow. Can any other word describe what’s happening right now, or is it just that I’m at a lost for words to hear Nelson talk about his feelings like that, no to hear him talk about me like that. He really thinks all of those things about me? He thinks I’m funny, I’m beautiful?
He thinks of me like I think of him?
Wow.
I want to shift out of my position and reach for him from underneath my hot cocoon, but something tells me not to, something tells me to wait, wait for it, it’s not the right time. I’m thinking it’s because I’m such a scary cat, but when I feel him move away I know that for the first time I’m thinking about how I’m going to take control of what I’m feeling right now. I’m not going to spiral off into the unknowns, no I’m going to be smart about this, and I’m not going to mess this one up. I’m not going to mess this up.
“Nah, you probably asleep right? Yeah, I thought so, haha got me here on my knees talking to you and you can’t hear me. If I scared you away I’m sorry, I’ll try not to do it again.”
Wait, no. What does that mean.
But he’s still moving away and I can hear him as he grunts and laughs about getting old and stiff knees and how he’s crazy for talking to a sleeping girl who doesn’t even want to be bothered by him. And boy do I feel bad, I feel real stinking bad, but I’m going to make it up.
I’m going to break out of this cocoon and when I get out I’m going to be a butterfly.
