Jasper's eyes were closed when I woke up. I kissed his cheek and waited for his reaction. He opened his eyes and smiled.
"Good mornin' Darlin." I blushed while saying good morning to him and sat up.
The door burst open as a frazzled Alice points to both of us. "Get up. You two need to get ready, and Jasper, you need to hunt before Bella gets here." Jasper nodded in response to her. We both start getting ready, Jasper whizzing around me to leave, but not before stopping to kiss my cheek goodbye. I changed into some clean clothes and mentally prepare myself for whatever's to come today.
It's noon by the time I go downstairs. Esme's in the kitchen cooking some Italian dishes. "It smells delicious, Esme."
She looks up at me and smiles, "Thank you, Lex, we're trying our best."
Emmett nearly throws a controller at me as he waves it about when I don't answer his question: "Hey, Lex, let's play something. I know you're not going to beat me again." I grab the controller out of his hand and sit down next to him, waiting for Bella to show up. After a round Esme makes Emmett help with cutting some food.
Eventually, Rosalie mutters, "Is she even Italian?" We can all tell she is irritated by her, and it was almost amusing. Everybody tilts their head up and as if on cue Rosalie mutters, "Oh, Get a whiff of that. Here comes the human."
I laugh the comment off and look around at the faces of the family. Esme seems excited, and just as she starts toward the entrance, Edward and Bella walk in.
"Bella! We're making Italiano for you!" Esme's cheerful disposition makes me smile. "Oh, um.." Come on Bella, use your words. Edward cuts in, "Bella, this is Esme, my mother for all intensive purposes." Bella kind of smiles and nods and then lets out an unsure "Bon Giorno?" which I internally cringe at, but Esme, ever the loving soul, smiles brightly. "Molto Bene!" Esme exclaims as Carlisle decides to speak up.
"You and your sister have finally given us an excuse to use our kitchen," he chuckles while he says it.
Bella looks over to me, wide-eyed, and apparently, my immediate reaction was to wave at her.
I mostly tune out after she turned away from me, but when I heard her try an attempt at lying, I immediately paid attention.
"Absolutely." A small smile was on her face, and then Edward just had to go and ruin a perfectly good thing. "She already ate." In response to that, Rosalie crushes the salad bowl in her hands, and I cover my mouth to prevent laughter from escaping. In response, Rose mutters a perfect which everybody could hear, and it only made me want to laugh harder.
"I just assumed, um, because you guys don't eat, you know." Bella tried explaining, but she ended up trailing off, which resulted in Esme cutting her off, "Yes, of course, that's very considerate of you."
I can't tell if Edward meant to whisper to Bella, but the next thing I heard was, "Just ignore Rosalie, I do." My laughter bubbles out of my mouth. Rose shot mw a glare, and as quickly as my laughter surfaced, it died down.
"Yeah, let's keep pretending that this isn't dangerous for all of us." Emmett put his hand on Rose's shoulder as she spoke.
My eyebrows furrowed after she finished speaking. Why was Rose alright with me being here but not Bella? Bella's voice pulled me from my thoughts, "I would never tell anybody anything." Carlisle responds quickly, "She knows that." His gaze was on Rosalie as he spoke.
Emmett spoke up as Rose and Carlisle stared at each other, "Well the problem is, you two have gone public now." And in a hurry to stop Emmett, Esme cuts in, "Emmett." Her tone was sharp. She wanted him to stop talking.
"No, she should know. The entire family could be impacted, even your sister." I blank'd at the thought, and suddenly Rose's aggressive attitude makes sense. However, Bella's voice cuts through my inner turmoil, "Badly? As in, I would become the meal?" When she finished speaking, everybody, with the exception of Rosalie, laughed lightly at her question.
Silence filled the room, and a faint thud sounded on the balcony. Alice and Jasper had returned. "Hi Bella, I'm Alice." the pixie-like vampire says as she walks up to Bella. I'm distracted by Jasper walking up to me, but I still hear Alice's next comment.
"Oh, you do smell good." The reaction was mixed, but Edward was definitely not pleased, as he glares at her as he utters her name with confusion. Alice laughs lightly and continues speaking, "Oh, it's alright, Bella and I are going to be great friends."
The house falls silent, and as Jasper places his hand on the small of my back, Carlisle speaks up, "Sorry, Jasper is our newest vegetarian, so it's more difficult for him." Alice glances at me with a smile on her face, as Jasper speaks up. "It's a pleasure to meet you."
His hand maneuvered to my hip somewhere during the conversation, and his grip is tight. I notice that his natural inflection, while speaking, had miraculously disappeared when he addressed Bella. Interesting.
Alice, sensing Jasper's tension, tries to calm him, "It's ok, Jasper, you won't hurt her."
He practically ignores her words as his hand slips into mine, still tense from my sister's presence.
I fiddle with Jasper's fingers as Edward speaks, "Uh, I'm going to take Bella on a tour of the rest of the house." Everybody nods, Alice being the only one to say anything, "Well, I'll see you soon." And for some reason, I was about 80% sure that was directed at Bella, my suspicions were confirmed when Bella nodded to her, confusion written all over her face. The couple walks away silently.
I chuckle alongside Esme and Alice until Carlisle speaks up, "I think that went well."
I look up at Jasper, studying him before softly speaking up, "Come on." He looks down at the sound of my voice, and I lead him to the balcony. He settles in behind me, his arms resting heavily on my shoulders.
I sigh before breaking the comfortable silence, "Jasper, please don't worry." I can feel his gaze on the top of my head, and then he's turning me to face him. He stares at me before speaking. "Has the thought of me ever hurt you, crossed your mind?" His tone is solemn.
"No. I trust you, and I know you won't." I didn't have to think before I answered him. A small smile settles on his face. "Lex, would you like to know a surprise?" I nod my head, enthusiastically to his question.
He smiles as he leans towards me, his lips near my ear, "I think I'm in love with you, Alexandria Swan. And, for us, in vampire terms, you're my soulmate," His voice was soft, but I heard him loud and clear, I whip my head back to look at him, his eyes boring into my own. "I won't force you to love me, to be my soulmate. But I just wanted you to know."
I smile before responding to him, "I think I'm in love with you too, Jasper." My emotions probably radiating off me.
He grins before leaning in and placing his lips on mine. The kiss is soft and sweet and full of love. When I pull away from him, I can't help but want to stay in this moment.
"Now that's adorable." Alice's voice rings out, and just then, do I remember the open door behind us.
