Chapter Four

LUC KNEW THAT NOTHING GOOD COULD EVER COME FROM BEING SUMMONED BY THE FALLEN. Having him ask to see you, is pretty much a death sentence, or - if you're supremely lucky - a promotion. But Luc wasn't lucky.

'Maybe he wants to thank you for finding Annabelle,' Dante said. 'He seemed happy to see her, and that's something we haven't seen him feel much before.' Even with the sincere smile spread on Dante's face, he was no more believable.

No one would acknowledge out loud what Luc had done when he had hit Anna. And yet - as the four of them were sitting spaced out around a table, in Sean's room - they were all aware of the possibility that this might be the last time they ever saw their brother.

'He might not kill you,' Sean said, as he offered them each a cup of tea. Jordan raised his eyebrow at him. 'I'm just saying, Anna likes you, right? So maybe she'll stop him killing you.'

'Sorry?' Luc's mouth fell open, 'What makes you think she likes me?' Luc stood up and paced towards to the window. He shoved his hands in his pockets, gazing across the grounds. The Hidden World always did look beautiful at this time of year. The winter moonlight flooded across the lake and fields of red grass, slicing in rays through the Forbidden Forest, like a knife through butter. The forest was so beautiful, but that was part of its charm, it lured you in with whispers of Magik and music. Until you were so deep, there was no way out, and that's when the Fay would find you . . . the Faerie's. They would drive you to the brink of insanity, before grilling you up on a bonfire whilst they sing happy whimsical songs, and dance along. That is why the forest is forbidden. From Sean's room, you could even see The Fallen's quarters further away, the stone castle in the distance, its turrets sky bound, stabbing up at the eastern clouds.

'She tried to kill me,' Luc sighed, his lips twisted and his eyes contemptuously watching a flock of tiny dragons flying above the castle. 'And I don't blame her. I hit her. The Fallen will want me dead. We all know that. It's better if we just face facts.'

The room was silent, filled with nothing but the sound of the dragon's wings beating, and the distant music of the Fay. Luc turned to his brothers, but met the eyes of no-one. None of them would look at him; they knew he was speaking the truth. They just didn't want to acknowledge it.

Sean was leafing through a dusty old book that he had snagged from one of the many haphazard tower niches dotted around the room. The gold writing along its spine was worn, no doubt because of how many times his hands had stroked the spine as he had read it. The Legend of Pandora's Box was the title. Luc knew the story too. Hell, everything that lived in The Hidden World knew that story off-by-heart. The story of the box that plagued the world; a box filled with black blood and feathers. Both that had once been part of The Fallen. Luc shivered, that box was in that castle somewhere, guarded by all manners of Magik creatures. The box . . . that little black and gold trinket box, was something The Fallen wanted no one to witness. Not even the brotherhood had seen it.

Dante was swirling the tea around the bottom of his cup. Luc watched him and his frequent quirky smile as he avoided sloshing it over his hand. Then there was Jordan. Luc frowned at him. He was staring at the back of his hand. Turning it over, moving it into the light, then brushing his other fingers over it. He stared at his hand with an expression of amazement and longing. And was that a little lust Luc could see? He shook his head. Why would Jordan have lust for his own hand? That was just plain silly.
