Chapter One

THERE WAS ONE THING ANNABELLE COULDN'T STAND. And that was being drunk. She tried to drink to forget her problems, like most people. Only as soon as she was drunk she remembered everything with crystal clarity. She was sitting in a bar downtown on a lot behind the main shopping mall, but she'd had way too many cocktails. She practically fell off of her chair, before her feet touched the floor and she steadied herself. She set her martini glass down on the bar, winked at the bar man and started her deliberate walk towards the door. Over the heavy music that was shaking through her, Anna heard someone yell, 'Breaking News! Look at the TV!' The music was cut, and the TV that hung above the bar was turned up. She spun round and pushed her way through the crowd of men that had got to their feet. She staggered back in the same direction.

'Turn it up, Mark,' one guy said to the barman. Anna's mouth fell open; then curved into a wicked smile as she read the new headline.

'Clive Hamilton, a local man was killed outside his home this afternoon. Mr Hamilton's body was discovered by a passer-by on his way home from the local high school. In an interview with police, he stated that he found the body laying face down on the porch of his house. It was found that Mr Hamilton had suffered a stab wound to his back. When police arrived on the scene they said that the butcher's knife was embedded between the victim's shoulders, and it had pierced his heart.' The news woman was a perky blond; Annabelle compressed the slight overwhelming feeling of guilt before shoving it away again. He isn't worth your guilt, she told herself.

The news woman carried on as Anna walked towards the bar, her black heels clicking on the tiles. 'There are no suspects currently but police are asking for anyone with any information to come forwards. Police are also on the lookout for the victim's daughter Annabelle Hamilton.' An old picture of Anna appeared on the screen, in which she was wearing her glasses that hid her dull brown eyes. Her dark blond hair was pulled back into a bun, and Anna couldn't help but think of how it was the drabbest photo she had ever seen of herself. That photo was shortly followed by another, one far more recent. Her hair was down and shiny; the glasses were gone so her eyes could be seen better, and best of all? She had filled out. She didn't look like a geeky student anymore. Much more impressive, she thought. I'm a babe.

'Annabelle may have been witness to the killing and could hold vital clues to the killer's identity, and why he committed the murder. So, if you have any information that could help with this investigation, please call the number below.'

Anna composed herself as someone tapped her on the shoulder. She turned round, ridding her cheeks of her satisfied smile. It had been so easy throwing the knife at her dad. The difficult part was pulling it out of her own chest after he retaliated. She hadn't worked out how she wasn't dead yet, but she was sure there must be a reason. She looked up at the man through her eyelashes. He had black hair that flicked across his forehead and curled around his ears. His eyes struck her the most. They were big, and their irises were ringed with different shades of blue with the darkest on the inside. He was taller that Anna - she guessed he was six foot, with a muscular build. Anna's eyes settled on a thin black line that curled around his neck and down his shoulder, and then disappeared. She very much wanted to take off his shirt and see the rest of it.
