Chapter 6- Meet the Vashta Nerada

The Doctor's POV

I stared at the skeleton along with Donna and the Golden Trio. My mind raced, and I fought my conscious to stay calm and figure out what was wrong. "How did this happen?" I asked the sobbing girl on the floor as I placed a hand on her shoulder. She looked up at me with sad brown eyes, much like mine.

"It's what happens to everyone. They all go to bed, sick with the plague and wake up dead. There's nothing left but bones. The only thing it can be is the Black Death." The young woman burst out crying, cutting me off as far as asking more questions.

"The Black Death? That's really contagious. It spread throughout most of Europe and Asia and killed over twenty-five million people." After receiving nothing but silence, Hermione shrugged and added, "I read it in a muggle book during the summer." I huffed, not amused. Donna, however, raised her eyebrows in my direction and smirked.

I needed to get my brain cells activated, so I began to pace around the room. Suddenly, a thought hit me like a Fanged Frisbee.

"It's Vashta Nerada!" I exclaimed smartly. "What's the Veshti Neroda?" asked Ron, who seemed very confused. I quickly corrected him with a chuckle. "Vashta Nerada. They're piranhas of the night, feeding off of live flesh. The Vashta Nerada are what's in the dark." My informational spiel obviously didn't help much, since Harry said, "I still don't get it."

"Don't worry." I assured him. "I'm sure we'll see it in action soon. In the meantime, Ron, I need you to go back to the TARDIS-" I was cut off short by Ron. "What's the TARDIS?" I gave him a dumbfounded look. "My time machine." Hermione took this as an oppurtunity to get into the conversation as well. "You named your time machine?" she asked.

Though my conscious advised me not to, I said, "You sound just as surprised as the time you found out that Hagrid named the three-headed dog." All three were shocked. "How do you know about-" Harry began to ask, before I cut him short. If we wanted to get out of here alive, we needed to set our plan of action in motion soon.

"Ron, go into the TARDIS. Go straight down the hallway, take two lefts, one right, and the next left. You should find a storage-like room with supplies and random stuff. Get five flashlights." I instructed the ginger, who nodded and ran off. I quickly continued before anyone could accidentally get hurt.

"While he's doing that, let's all just stand here and stay in the light. Don't step anywhere near the dark." Harry gave me a blank look. "Why not?" I decided to answer honestly. "You will die."
