Chapter 8- Fighting the Vashta Nerada

Donna's POV

While we waited for the ginger kid to come back, I thought about how we would fight the Vashta Nerada. Last time, we were forced to sacrifice someone, and someone close to the Doctor. The creatures we were up against were very dangerous, not to mention impossible to defeat. So what made the situation at hand now more possible than the time before?

The Doctor snapped me out of my thoughts by placing his hand gently on my shoulder. His facial expression seemed to tell me 'it's going to be alright'. I nodded confidently and hoped he was right. The Doctor spoke again, though this time more physically. "I'll make sure no one dies. For River's sake." he promised. The look on his face was unforgettable.

We dwelled in the past no more. Soon enough, the Doctor was back to his usual self, giving out instructions and important tips to know for survival. Life with the Doctor was such a big adventure. One was never sure if death could be upon them.

"Okay, here's what we're going to do. We don't know how long the Vashta Nerada's been here, so we need to work quickly. First, we need to locate the morgue." the Doctor informed us hurriedly, yet slowly enough so we could comprehend. Everyone looked around at each other for a few minutes before Hermione raised her hand.

"Usually in cities such as this one, the morgue would be located near the neighborhoods, mostly so the families wouldn't have to carry their dead very far." The Doctor raised his eyebrows, obviously impressed. "Thank you, Hermione. Let's try looking again." We scanned the skies, finally locating the morgue.

"Right, now this is the tricky part. We'll have to find the Vashta Nerada and lure them into the morgue. Then they can feast on the bodies to their hearts content." "Isn't that sort of disrespectful to the families of the deceased?" Hermione asked the Doctor seriously. "Well, in situations other than this, I would say 'yes'. Vashta Nerada, however..." he trailed off as another spoke up.

"How are we going to lure them in?" Ron asked. "We let them follow us into the morgue." Harry, the famous one, said, "Sort of like Scooby Doo?" Everyone but the Doctor seemed confused. "Yes, Harry, exactly like Scooby Doo!" the Doctor exclaimed with a smile. Boys...

"Any more questions?" the Doctor asked, his plan apparently finished. I began to shake my head 'no' before noticing a fatal flaw. "Doctor? How are we going to get out? We can't stay trapped in the morgue after luring them in there. They'll..." I paused and hoped he would answer so I wouldn't have to continue. I really didn't want to think about what would happen if the Vashta Nerada came too close to us.

"I'll make an escape, then close it after we've been through." the Doctor said after a moment of thought. We all looked around at each other once more, though this time it was more for support. We had a bond now; we were about to go through something that was sure to be dangerous. But we would survive it together. At least we hoped so.

~~~~~~~~
It took the Doctor only five minutes to create a sealable escape door at the top of the morgue. As he ran back to us (he never stopped running), he barked, "Hurry up! We haven't got much time!" and gestured for us to run to the morgue to began the first part of our plan.
I was probably the most out of shape. We had just started running and I was already out of breath. The Doctor looked over and saw me panting. "Only a little bit further," he yelled over the pounding of our feet. I looked ahead and spotted the morgue. It appeared to be several more blocks away. I tried to shake my head in frustration, but it was already bouncing up and down due to my lack of running skills.
When we finally reached the morgue, I had to stop and take a break. Exercise was beginning to take its toll on me. When I was able to breath normal again, we pressed on. Flashlights on and ready, we scanned the shadows around us, constantly checking to see if they moved. The deadly shadows grew fast and were nearly uncontrollable.
Five minutes had passed when we spotted the first shadow. Shouts were made, and the sound of pounding feet against the cement floor was heard once more. We all run faster than we had ever run before; there was no time to slow down, to stop and think. You just had to run.
We ran for minutes before we reached the roof of the building. The Doctor, the Golden Trio, and I climbed out of the small resealable hole. The shadows were drawing ever closer, and time was running out. Seconds seemed to pass by like hours as the Doctor tried his hardest to reseal the door. Bated breaths hung in the air like clouds. Finally, it shut with a click.
We rejoiced and celebrated on the top of the morgue. It was after a round of high-fives that Harry wondered, "How are we going to get down?" The Doctor smiled, then exclaimed, "I can help with that!" A minute later and the TARDIS was parked on the roof of the building. The alien was just about to usher everyone back into the time machine when it happened.
A bell, sounding much like a grandfather clock, rang out loudly. We all turned to locate the source of the noise. The Doctor, however, ran to the TARDIS as yelled a warning to us. "Don't follow me inside! Stay where you are!" Of course, I wasn't about to listen to him. It was obvious he was in danger, and there was no way I wasn't going to help him.
I entered the TARDIS to find three cackling witches. I assumed the Doctor knew them; his face resembled disgust and hatred. Needless to say, he didn't seem happy to see them. "Hello again, Carrionites." the Doctor shouted to the villainous figures. Something was about to happen, I could just feel it.
