I knew who you were
Long before we ever met.
You were Adam,
The people-pleaser,
The guy that everyone
Wanted as a close friend.
All the girls swooned
When you walked by,
But you didn't
Seem to notice.
I noticed it,
Of course, but
I didn't really swoon
Over you. We
Were merely strangers,
Two individuals who
Would see each other,
But not really
See each other.
-
It wasn't until
We got paired up for that
English project on Shakespeare,
Romeo and Juliet,
That we met.
Two teenagers,
A boy and a girl.
It could've been anyone.
I could've been paired
With anyone else
In the classroom,
But it was with you.
You were the Romeo,
But I was no Juliet.
-
What is your full name?
You had asked me.
I didn't answer;
I didn't think that
You really wanted to know.
But you asked every day
Until I finally spoke:
Macy Ellen Parker.
You nodded, smiled, and said:
I'm Adam,
And I replied:
I know.
-
It was an at-home project,
But we met
At the library instead.
You said that
It was loud at your house
Because of your sister
And her friends.
And I didn't want
You to see my
Home. I didn't
Want to become
Attached to you in
Such a short amount
Of time, because
I knew I would
End up getting hurt
In the long run.
-
Any ideas?
You asked, looking at me.
I shook my head.
You don't talk a lot,
Do you?
I shook my head,
Again.
You should.
I looked up at you,
And you said,
Talk, I mean.
And went back
To the books.
-
You got sick with the flu
A few days later,
So we couldn't work
On the project
For a week.
The teacher gave us extra time,
Because of your health.
I was grateful.
Not for your sickness,
Of course not,
But for time;
I didn't want
Our time together
To end so quickly,
After all.
