When you returned to school,
You didn't speak to me
For a whole week.
I had had enough of it.
What's wrong?
I finally asked you
And tried to control
my irritability.
You grinned and said,
So you can talk.
I scowled and turned away,
Back to our assignment.
Come on,
You reached to nudge me,
I'm guessing,
But you retracted your hand
When I flinched
Away from you.
That was a good joke.
I glanced up and said,
I hate jokes.
You didn't joke anymore.
-
We met during lunch
To work on our project
In our school library.
You let the door slam
When you walked in,
Something I would never dare do,
And the librarian shushed you.
You held back laughter
As you walked over
To my table,
But I was silent.
You said,
Her expression was golden.
I looked up,
Raising an eyebrow.
Don't you think so?
I shrugged a little.
Okay.
We both fell silent.
-
The bell rang,
Signaling the end of lunch,
So we stood,
Gathered our books,
And left.
Our next period
Was English,
The class we shared,
So we walked together.
People glanced over,
But I kept my eyes forward.
-
Two days left,
The teacher said
To you and I
As we took our seats.
They must be done
By Friday.
You didn't react,
But I was crushed,
Another part of me,
Broken into pieces.
-
Macy,
You said
On the last day
That we met to work
On the project,
I've had a good time,
Working with you.
I looked up at you.
No,
You answered my
Unasked question,
I am not lying.
You're cool.
Quiet, but cool.
Like a wolf.
That,
Along with the fact
that I had red hair
Contributed to my new nickname,
Little Red.
