 Tony:

“Thanks so much!” A fan had just given me a small turtle plush toy. It made me smile. I gave her a hug and took a picture with her. As she left the meet & greet table, my phone rang. I looked at the caller ID and saw that it was Stephanie calling. My smile left my face. “Excuse me. I have to take this.” I said to the next fan feeling bad about making them wait.

I stood up and answered the phone. “Hi, Steph.” “Hey, Tony.  Are you busy?” she asked through the receiver. “I’m at a meet & greet at the moment. What’s up?” I knew I couldn’t avoid her much longer. Things had been rough between us for the past month and it was driving me crazy. “Oh, I’ll just call you later then.” Anyone else would think she sounded disappointed but I knew her better than that. She was faking. “No, you know what? Let’s just get this over with now.” My voice sounded cold but I really didn’t mind at the moment. I leaned into Vic’s ear and whispered, “Hey dude, it’s a call from Steph and I need to take it. I’ll be back a soon as this is over.” Vic simply nodded. He knew something was up between Steph and me, so he didn’t ask questions. I apologized to the fans standing in line for leaving. I walked back towards the bus.

“What did you want to say?” I spoke coldly into the phone. “I want to know what’s up with you! You’ve been acting so weird lately. We haven’t spoken in about three days.” She did her best to sound hurt and all it did was piss me off. “Excuse me, but I’ve been the one calling you every day. The better question here is what’s up with you? You’ve been ignoring my calls and texts! I don’t know what to do to make you happy anymore. Nothing is the same and I’m tired of it. How long are we going to keep this up until we admit that neither of us feels the same anymore?” I had reached my limit of arguments and apologies. “You’re right. Nothing is the same! I wish it was but I can’t say that I love you now like I did when we first met. I can’t take the fact that you’re rarely around. I have to go out with my friends and their boyfriends when I can’t even see mine without buying a ticket for a show.” Steph’s voice was cold. She was done acting like she cared. “Forgive me, but I’ve worked so hard to be at the point that I am now and I’m not going to throw it all away to satisfy my girlfriend. If you really cared about me then you’d accept my lifestyle and be happy for me. But apparently, that’s too much to ask from you.” I was pacing outside the bus now. “Well I can’t Tony. I need someone who is going to be at arms reach when I need him, not all the other way across the world most of the time!” She was shouting and my patience was running thinner each second. “I can’t do anything about that. I’m sorry!” “You can be such an asshole sometimes!” That comment was my breaking point. “If I’m such an asshole then why are you still with me? I tried to make things work between us but it’s no fucking use! So you know what? Consider yourself rid of this asshole because we’re done! I’m not going to do this anymore!” I spit the words out, my voice cold and sharp. There was silence on the other end of the line for a moment. “Okay. If that’s what you want then we’re over. Have fun with you stupid band.” Suddenly, the dial tone was sounding clear.

I took a deep breath and took a seat on one of the steps to the bus entrance. I closed my eyes and placed my face in my hands and tried to calm down. There was no way I could go back to the signing now. I couldn’t believe I had just broken up with Steph. We had been through so much together. I sighed and, taking off my snapback, I ran my hand through my hair with my eyes still closed. That’s when I heard someone clear their throat and I looked up to find a teenage girl standing before me.

“Umm, hi, Tony. Sorry to bother you.”
