The four of them landed in Italy.
Alex bent over instantly, clutching at her knees as Pietro sympathetically patted her on the back. Just behind them, Wanda was being sick and out of the corner of her eye, Alex saw Kore holding her hair back for her.
Straightening up, Alex examined the small lab in front of her. Pietro seemed to have the same qualms she did, as he asked,
"Is it bigger on the inside?"
"I sure hope so Pie-crust. This is very unhelpful to the massive final battle I pictured."
"That wasn't the plan."
"Shush, check on Wanda."
Kore was looking horrified at the building in front of her. When Alex touched her arm, she jumped.
"Are you alright?"
"Not particularly, no," she raised her cold grey eyes to meet Alex's, "There are no Panfortis here. It's simply a communication building. And that means I can't be here."
"What? But we need you?"
"Alastair is a powerful man. But C.R.Y.P.T belongs to powerful men. With him gone, it is a start but if the others know I helped you, I'm a target for sure."
"How do you know he hasn't already told them about you?"
"Because I would be dead."
The words hung between them before Alex dismissed them with a quick nod, "I'll send you back, with Wanda."
Wanda let out a low groan as Kore nodded. With a flick of her wrist, Alex teleported them and Pietro swept her off her feet as she crumpled again.
"Ready, darling?" She asked, trying to remain composed.
"Are you sure you're strong enough for this?"
"Yeah. It's fine, you're finding Alastair anyway. I'm just finding the files for the known panfortis and if there are no panfortis here, we didn't need Wanda anyway. I just overexerted myself the past few days."
"You can rest soon."
"We can rest together." Alex patted Pietro's cheek and teleported into the lab's bathrooms. Nausea hit her and she clutched at the wall for support. Unfortunately, she used the wrong hand and had to muffle a cry of pain as she smacked her amputation, hard.
There was no time to waste though, and she had to awkwardly set a timer on her phone for five minutes. Pietro would be doing the same, and as he ran around the base, he would be spreading gasoline and heat-activated bombs. Once five minutes were passed, they would meet at the front and blow the whole thing sky high as they left.
If Wanda was here, she would have been finding the Panfortis and breaking them out of their cells. Depending on how many there were, Alex would have teleported them away or teleported an aeroplane for them.
As much as she was upset there would be no rescue of the Panfortis today, Alex also felt immense relief that she would be able to have a proper sleep before doing mass teleportation again.
All she had to do now was find any files that would help her track down the Panfortis loose in the world.
Pietro was finding Alastair.
He was finding Alastair.
Alex tapped her fingers in contemplation and teleported to Alastair.
For a moment, she stood in the corner and watched him work. There had never been a chance like this before, to examine her brother.
Alex's skin was just browner than his, her nose longer although they both curved down in the same way. His eyes were slightly narrower, the colour of charred wood compared to Alex's sharp coffee gaze. She inherited her freckles from her mother, he had none but his jawline was stolen from her.
When he finally noticed Alex was there, the fierce anger that clung to his frame as he stood was all Alex's father. She wondered if he had learnt it, or got it from his own.
"Are you here to kill me?"
"After we talk." Alex watched his hand slip under the desk and pull out a gun. She didn't know if the safety was on or if it was even loaded, "A gun? Really? Can you not even offer me a cup of tea first?"
"My apologies. I didn't realise you intended for us to talk long."
"I don't."
"So what is this? Some distraction? Is my little Alchemystery somewhere else in this place?"
"Alchemystery?"
"Kore. I'm surprised you even remember her." Alastair leaned forwards, resting his head on his hands, "I've lined something nice up for her."
"She said you would."
Alex realised it was a trap about the same time the bullet hit her in the leg.
She didn't hesitate, teleporting a fraction to the right as he tried to shoot her again and teleporting the gun into her hand,
"What the hell, brother?"
Alastair's brow was furrowed and he was examining her in a way that made Alex feel like a piece of meat, "You didn't snap your fingers."
"No. I don't have to."
"But you do. We trained it into you, you shouldn't be able to do that, it's not fair."
Alex choked out a laugh at the whine in his voice, the petulant child Theundruk had shown her coming out in the grown man before her.
"You've gotten used to those like me being under your command, brother. I think you've forgotten how powerful we really are," she dropped the gun and it hovered in the air, teleporting rapidly to stay in the same place as she checked the time on her phone, "We have one minute to talk. Convince me why you should live."
