Steve set the letter down. He was the last one to read it and it took him a full moment to comprehend what it said. The other Avengers watched him carefully.
"What the f—"
"Woah!" Tony shouted, louder than Steve's attempt to swear, "Steve, watch your language."
"Did you know? Is this where you disappeared to yesterday? How long have you known?"
"Happy found her yesterday, yes. I was going to convince her to come back this morning but the house was empty and there was just this note."
Natasha had originally been perched carefully on the counter but from the moment Steve finished the letter, she had been leaning slightly more forward, ready to interrupt the inevitable fight between Steve and Tony. When she spoke, it was in a quiet voice, "We can call her."
"Yes. Get her to reconsider-" Steve tried to say but Natasha shook her head,
"This is...a very Alex choice. We taught her well enough that she won't change her mind and if we want to remain in her life, as I assume we all do, the best way to do that is to support this."
"No," Steve and Tony said in unison, and Tony continued, "It's that boy—"
"Come on, after all that he's done, why are you still holding who Pietro used to be against him?"
"I'm not. He's alright, but when he's with Alex—"
"They are unstoppable," Natasha interrupted, "Surely you've seen how they look at each other, the way they fought in Sokovia. So many more moments we're missed, but they're been there for each other. You and me know better than anyone that you can't control who you fall for. And if anyone can do this, build a home for...mutants, then it will be them."
"I hate it when you're right," Steve muttered and then, in a louder voice, "So both her and Pietro? Wanda's gone too, that means we're down three members to the team. What good is just me, Nat, Rhodes and Sam?"
"Wanda is returning to us soon, Alex said. We can also try out this Kore girl."
"Too risky," Natasha shook her head, "I'll have to meet her before we trust her."
"Well," Tony said, rubbing his nose, "I know someone else who could join. Exactly like me, actually, it'll be like I never left."
"Is that meant to convince us?" Natasha muttered as Steve leaned forwards,
"Who?"
"Chesney Stark."
"Uncle?"
"Daughter."
"Oh sh—"
