It didn't take long until Jane could see the castle again from the carriage window. The journey had allowed her tears to dry, yet her mind felt heavier and heavier as more questions kept piling on.
It's impossible. There's no such thing as magic. But what was that thing back there? The scene which appeared when Peta had touched me... who is that woman I keep seeing?! It's ridiculous, it must all be a joke... right?
She was scared, those strange, yet familiar people, the grungy tavern, which almost felt homelike. Despite her fear, there was still some part of her which wished she hadn't left the tavern so fast. She didn't find out anything she needed to know, but worst of all she had no one she could talk to about this.
Alex would get angry that she went without him, Charlotte would tell Queen Lily or the King, there's Minnie, but perhaps she would also get angry she lied...
There is only Peta... She thought.
As soon as the carriage stopped, she didn't wait for a hand down the steps, instead, she jumped right out and ran past the main door to the maid's back entrance which led to the kitchen, holding her dress up as she ran.
She opened the heavy wooden door as fast as she could and made for the stairs. However, as soon as she turned the stone-walled corner, Jane collided straight into a hard figure. Immediately, masculine hands wrapped around her waist as if to steady her, but instead sent electricity up her torso, making her head spin in confusion.
"Jane." A familiar voice breathed, she felt the hot heat of his breath move the hair around her ear.
She slowly unravelled her scrunched up fists which had automatically risen up to eye height, (chest height on him) to protect her, and instead placed them flat on his hard chest which was rising rapidly.
"I am sorry, your highness... I uh, didn't see you..." She looked up at the angelic face which looked down at her. Jane felt her cheeks blush immensely as their eyes connected.
Her long lashes flickered against her cheeks, and he could do nothing to stop himself from moving his hand up to caress them softly. As soon as his hand connected with her cheek, she instantly melted into him.
A sigh seemed to escape her lips without meaning too, one that had unknowingly made a home in her chest on the way home. It was if a massive weight had lifted from her body, and now all she wanted to do was talk. To talk to the only person that ever seemed to really know her. To tell him everything she had been holding in for the past few days.
Her dreams, the meeting with Peta, the magic, what was happening between her and Alex! It all seemed insane and dreamlike putting it that way but some part of her was sure it was all so real.
"Whats wrong Jane?" Alex asked, brows furrowed worryingly.
In response, she was pulled back from her thoughts. Jane took Alex's hand which was once on her cheek and lowered it.
"Alex, I, I have something to tell-" she began, before Alex immediately put his free hand around her waist and pulled her closer to him which made her lose her train of thought. However, he couldn't seem to stop himself in this minute. He hadn't seen her all day, and for some reason, since last night, he couldn't bear to be close to her and not feel her entire body against his. To feel the electricity between them all over his body, well that was a different feeling altogether.
"You can tell me anything Jane, you know that." He said, his voice husky but protective.
At this, she looked up into his eyes again.
Those eyes are something out of this world. Alex thought, with a sigh.
"Alex, I want to tell you something, but not here. It is-" Jane was more confident this time, but was interrupted by a voice which seemed to boom around this castle hallway, making Jane jump in surprise.
"Alexander. It is time for your lessons. Go along." The king stood just a little behind Jane down the low lit hallway.
"But father, Jane and I were-" Alex began.
"Do not make me say it twice Alexander." He demanded, teeth clenched.
Alex dropped his shoulders in defeat, and with a last apologetic look at Jane, he walked past her and his father down the hallway towards his classroom.
Janes' shoulders had dropped too, and without even noticing when, the weight on her chest had reappeared. She turned around to face the king who was blatantly staring at her with dark powerful eyes.
"Your majesty." She said, curtsying respectfully, her eyes to the ground.
"Lady Jane. You must understand. Alexander has responsibilities now, ones which are greater than ever before." He had approached her now, only a step or two away. His shadow seemed to encompass the entire hallway behind him, making it even darker than before.
"I understand your Majesty."
"I hope you do Lady Jane." His eyes bore into hers. "There are important things he must start to understand as heir, and you will not get in the way." The last words were said slow and deep in order to make them clear.
Jane held the Kings gaze for a moment, her eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
"I understand your Majesty." She said, before immediately bowing her head again.
"Lady Charlotte is looking for you. I suggest you go find her before she takes the castle down in her search." The King said over his shoulder as he walked away from Jane back down the hall.
Lady Jane held her curtsy until the king had disappeared from her sight before she sighed to herself. She had almost told Alex everything. Right in the middle of a hall, where anyone could have overheard! Just because she was caught up in yet another moment with Alex. What is happening to her?
"Stupid!" She whispered to herself angrily. Jane then turned on her heal and ran along the hall in search of Charlotte.
