Mikey finally pulls his hands away from his face and looks up.
"Aspen. Please don't freak out. I'm so sorry, ok? There's nothing I could do about it." My hands go clammy again and my heart beat quickens.
"Freak out about what? Mikey, what?"
He turns to me and wraps his hand around mine. He lets out a deep breath.
"Mum and dad split up."
"Oh." I mean, yeah it's disappointing, but you could see it coming from a mile away. He shakes his head.
"That's not all. Mums moving out. And taking you with her. Dads sending me to a military campus." My eyes fill with tears and I begin to shake.
"What? No, they can't do this! They can't!" My voice is shaky. Mikey grips my hand.
"Please, Aspen. It's ok. It's gonna be ok." I shake my head.
"It's not gonna be ok! Michael you cannot leave me! Don't you understand? I can't do it if you're not here!" I yell, standing up and pulling myself from his grip.
"Aspen. Calm down. Please. I promise it will be ok." He stands up after me.
"No! It won't, Michael! It's not ok. It's never been ok! My life is a mess!" He pulls me to his chest and runs his hand down the back of my head.
"Shhhhh. Aspen calm down." I thrash against his chest, ugly sobs escaping my lips.
"Let me go! Michael let me go!" He tries his best to keep hold of me, but I manage to get out of his arms.

I start running.
"Aspen! Come back! Please, you'll get hurt!" He yells after me. I keep running, as fast as my legs would let me. I hear Michael scowl and kick the small wall around the playground.
When I'm far enough away, I collapse on the ground, makeup running down my face.
I can't believe it. My cruel parents are taking the only real thing in my life away. And expecting me to be ok with it.

••••••••••

I've been sitting by the river, tears streaming down my face, for at least three hours. My phone is going off like crazy. Messages and calls from both my parents, Michael, Sage, Alice and Axel, but I've ignored them all.
Sage's name pops up on my screen once again. I sigh and put it to my ear.
"Hi." I breath. I hear her sigh.
"Oh, Aspen. Thank god. Where are you?" She asks.
"The park." I mumble.
"Why are you at the park? Are you ok?" I can hear the clicking of high heels and Alice's voice asking if I'm ok.
"Mhmm. Don't worry about me." I say quietly.
"How can I not worry? You've skipped half the day, haven't been answering our calls, and you sound terrible! What's going on?" She asks frantically.
"Nothing, Sage. I'm fine, ok? Look, I can't go to the shops. Are you going to Axels game?" I ask.
"Yeah. Why?" She sounds worried and concerned.
"Good. I'll meet you there. And Sage?"
She hums in response.
"Don't worry about me. I'm fine. I just got a little overwhelmed but I'm ok now. Tell Alice. I'll see you at the game." I hang up, not waiting for a response.

I type a quick message to Axel.
'Hey, Ax. I'm fine. Don't worry. Got a bit overwhelmed. I'll see you at the game. Love you ❤'

Almost instantly, I receive a text back
'Oh my god, Aspen. You had me terrified. You sure you're ok?'
I reply
'I'm fine, babe. I promise.'
He texts back
'Ok. Be safe, beautiful. I'll see you at the game. Love you xx'

•••••••••
I really didn't want to go home, but I had to get ready for the game. So I called Michael asking him to meet me at the school with some jeans, Axels jersey and my makeup bag.
