[Draco's POV]
It was probably only a few seconds but for Draco it seemed like an eternity. An eternity of silence and dread crept in...
Shit. She's going to say no.
"Hermione?" He asked softly, he almost couldn't hear what he said.
"Yes." She drew her hand from her mouth and beamed at him, nodding vigorously, "Yes, yes, yes!" Relief flooded through him as he got up from one knee and Hermione cupped his face with both hand and pulled him into a kiss before throwing her arms around him. He buried his face is her hair and smiled the biggest smile he had ever smiled, so much that it started to hurt.
He pulled away and slipped the ring onto her ring finger to find that it - thankfully - fit perfectly. Hermione flashed the ring around, "It's beautiful. Thank you."
"Thank you for saying yes."
"Of course I'd say yes!" She scoffed and raised an eyebrow, "Were you scared that I was going to say no?"
"Of course I was scared. That ring had been in my pocket for like a month! Sitting there, getting heavier and heavier each day. The whole day I was scared shitless, I was afraid that something would go wrong and I mean, it kind of did, Astoria trying to burn down your house and all, haha." He grabbed her hand, "Well, you said that you had a curfew to get back to."
"We could stay a bit longer?"
"Hermione. I can't get busted by your parents on our first day of being engaged. I'll take you out tomorrow."
"I have work and so do you."
"Then I'll take you out for lunch, we could invite Potter and Weasley as well if you want."
"I want to tell everyone all at once. Maybe we could tell them on Sunday? You know, at the Burrow."
"Sure. But we should get back, your parents are going to kill me."
CRACK!
Draco apparated them to the Grangers' doorstep, "I'll see you tomorrow, fiancée." The word seemed strange on his tongue but he liked it.
Hermione chuckled and kissed him once more, "Goodnight, fiancé." They both laughed at the strange word, about how foreign it seemed to them. It was like going up a level in a game, you get new upgrades like going from girlfriend to fiancée. She looked back one more time at Draco and smiled before shutting the door behind her.
Draco lingered around a little longer, still stuck in what seemed like a trance. It didn't feel real. We're getting married. We're actually gonna get married! He pushed his hand through his hair and sighed, the day hadn't exactly gone the way he planned for it to go but oh well, she still said yes. Beaming like an idiot, he walked down the now dark street to find a taxi, he didn't trust himself to apparate back home without someone there to kind of guide him because who knows where he'll get lost if he went in this stage. To any onlooker, he would've looked like a boy in his late teens who was probably on weed, but he was on top of the world.
By the time he got to Malfoy Manor it was close to midnight. He couldn't wait to tell his mother who was probably asleep but he still couldn't help but contemplate what would happen if he decided to be a horribly selfish son and woke his mother up. His mother was asleep on the couch in front of the TV, a muggle device that he still couldn't figure out how to use. As much as he wanted to he couldn't wake her up, she hadn't gotten a proper sleep in a long while. He carried a blanket to where she slept, draped it around her shoulders and switched off the TV. Draco walked out of the living room and switched off the lights on his way out.
"Draco?" A quiet voice came from the living room.
"Yes, mother?" He walked back inside to find her sitting up. She had gotten unimaginably kinder ever since the war was over but her voice was still as stern as it had been when he first remembered opening his eyes.
"So? What did she say?" His mother had been one of the first people he discussed his plan with, she was the one who helped him pick out the ring.
"She said yes, mother, she said yes!" His mother practically sprang out of the couch and threw her arms around him.
"Oh my boy's getting married!" She pressed her lips to his cheek, "My boy's actually getting married!" He could feel her tears against his neck and his own hot against his cheek.
"I know, mum, I'm getting married." Draco could hardly believe the words himself. He was going to marry the girl he loved the most and soon they'll have little people running around everywhere and they'll be half him and half the person he loves. Although he does wish that they'll lean more towards Hermione, that way he could rest assured that they'll grow up a genius. "Come on, mum. Let's get you to bed."
He walked his mother off to bed and he lay their wide awake on his own bed, staring up at the familiar ceiling unable to fall asleep. He once read a quote from a muggle book: "You know you're in love when you can't fall asleep, because reality is finally better than your dreams."
[Hermione's POV]
That night Hermione sat on her bed, turning the diamond around her finger over and over again, almost making sure that it was real. She must've been too tired because when she woke up she didn't even remember falling asleep. Her parents were still asleep when she went down to cook herself some breakfast so she went to work straight away.
She must've been acting different somehow because as soon as she stepped into her office, Cheryl yanked Hermione's left hand up and squealed.
"YOU'RE ENGAGED!"
"Yeah, I've noticed, could you please keep it down?"
"But you're getting married! Who else knows?" She keeps shouting.
"No one yet. I want to tell everyone on Sunday, please? Don't tell anyone."
"My lips are sealed." She pretended to zip up her lips and grinned at her, "He must love you a lot to buy you a ring like that." She brought Hermione hand to her eye level, "It even looks custom made!"
"Really? Anyway, back to work. I got a phone call from Harry saying that they'll be a meeting today after lunch break so -"
"Hey, Hermione!" Ginny's voice chirped from the doorway as she strode over to Hermione.
"Ginny," she took a look at her bulging belly and wonder how she could still properly walk with that much ease, "you have to sit down. You're due in less than a month!"
"I'll be fine," but she still sat down when Hermione offered her a chair, "That little shit proposed!" She snatched up her hand, "He finally proposed! Do you know how many times he's called me to ask if you'd want to marry him? About time, Malfoy! And you're going to be Mrs. Malfoy, wow, this is gonna be interesting."
"Ginny," she whined, "Please keep it down."
"Why? This is a good thing, everyone should know about it!"
"I'll tell them on Sunday, with everyone there."
"Well, that's only another week!" She said sarcastically.
"Please, I want everyone to be there."
"Fine. But if you're not gonna tell them, I will."
"Deal."
