Driving into the dark and quite town of Greendale, I can't help but get a chill. As the dull glow of a red neon sign ahead acted like a guide I slowly drive towards it. I am so tired from driving for the past week that I can't wait to sleep some where that isn't the back of my car. A small Motor Inn came into view the red neon sign flicked in the darkness like a beacon. A flood of relief ran though me at the sight of it, I have been driving for days with no signs of a town and I was starting to worry that I was lost, but now I was in the middle of no where and pretty safe.
I pulled up outside the Motor Inn and stared in the window to try and see if it was open. I knocked heavily on the door and listened for signs of life.
"Hello." I called. "Anyone here?"
I heard footsteps on the old wooden floors, and then an old lady appeared at the door. She had grey hair and was wearing a white nighty with pink flowers on it; she slowly opened the door and looked me up and down.
"Can I help you?" She asked.
"Yes, I was wondering if there was any rooms for rent?" I answered.
"You want a room?" She asked kind of shocked.
"Yes, if you have got one."
"Well, come on it dear, my name is Betty." She said. Suddenly all happy and excited. "We don't get a lot of visitors here, if you haven't noticed we are kind of in the middle of no where." She laughed.
"Yes, well that's why I like it" I mummbled.
After I checked in, I carried my bags up to the second floor and found the room I was looking for, 12B. The door creaked as I slowly opened it and walked into the room.
I dumped my bags on the floor and slowly walked around, running my finger of the dust cover the room, Betty wasn't lying when she said no one had stayed here in a while.
There was a small bathroom with a shower and a small mirror and draws in the back of the room. The double bed sat in the middle of room with a small TV in front of it on a table. I walked over to the window, it looked over the road and into the forest on the over side.
I sighed heavily and flopped on the bed.
"This is home for the moment." I said quietly to myself.
A light knock came at the door with woke me from my restless sleep, I have always had trouble sleeping in a new place.
"Zoey, dear." Betty sweet voice came lightly though the door.
"I'm coming Betty." I said groggily. I slowly walked to the door while trying to fight off a yawn.
I slowly opened to door to fine a very cheery Betty at the door.
"I was wondering if you wanted breakfast?" She asked
"That would be lovely thank you, I will be down it a second." I answered with a polite smile.
I slowly closed the door and flopped back onto to the bed and groaned, it was way to early to be up.
I made my wall downstairs and into the small room on the left where Betty was busy setting up a beautiful breakfast for us.
"Is there anyone else joining us?" I joked. Looking at all the food that was sitting on the table, there was no way I was going to be able to eat this all.
"No dear, just you and me I didn't know if you were going to be super hungry or not." He answered with a sweet smile; I could tell she was a little embarrassed that she made this much food.
"Well it looks very lovely Betty, Thank you so much." I said trying to ease her embarrassment a little.
"It's no problem dear, I love to cook and it's been so long since someone has been here I didn't noticed how much I missed it."
We ate in silence for a while, it wasn't awkward or anything it was just nice. I have missed having a nice cooked breakfast instead of just picking up something quick because I wanted to get moving. Betty reminded me of my Mum, I like to think that if Mum had gotten a chance to grow old she would have been like Betty, with dad by her side the whole time.
"Are you staying long?" Betty asked. Breaking me from my silence.
"Ah, I don't really know yet, it just depends really." I answered nervously.
"Well if you do, the high school here is pretty good, you cant be that old, if you wanted to go back into the educational system." She said with a smile.
"I might think about it, if I stay." I never really went to school, sure I did the primary school stuff but after what happened to Mum and Dad, I had to leave and never really stayed long enough in one place to set down roots.
After finishing breakfast I thanked Betty and went out and jumped into my car. I decided I should drive around and have look at the town that could become my temp-home for a couple of months.
The town was very beautiful, wooden houses and rustic style shops; it was almost like the town hadn't moved with the times. A piece of history that has remained untouched it was amazing.
I drove past the high school and slowly came to a stop outside; it was the same as the rest of the town. I smiled at I imagined myself attending school and making friends. Just being happy.
I then noticed that it was a weekday and there were people in the school and they were beginning to stare, I slowly drove down the road and pulled over. I walked into the school and made my way slowly down the halls, just looking.
Everyone was busy chatting and mainly just minding their own business.
I some how wondered around in circles enough for me to reach the office.
I walked in and there was an old lady sitting in a desk in the middle of the room, behind her there were two doors. One said principle, the other one said Guidance Office principle.
"Can I help you?" The office lady said sweetly.
"Ah. I was looking into enrolling here." I said nervously. I don't handle talking to people in authority positions; I get really nervous and intimidated.
"You do know it's the middle of the year?" She asked. As if I was some hermit who has been living under a rock for the whole year.
"Yes. I move around a lot." I answered her as politely as I could.
"Well, I will need a parent or guardian to sign some papers for you before you can enroll." She said. I could see her shuffling though papers on her desk, most likely looking for the paper I needed.
"Ahh... I kind of cant do that." I said nervously.
The office lady, who I now know from the name plat on her desk is called Mrs. Miller, looked up and kind of stared at me.
"Why not?" She asked confused.
"Ah. My parents are dead, I'm on my own."
"Oh I'm sorry but I can't enroll you with some sort of guardian." Mrs. Miller said. I could her the pity on her voice; I hated it when they pitied me.
"Well, I might be able to get the lady I'm staying with to sign it." I said.
"Good." She said handing me some papers. "Bring theses back tomorrow and if everything checks out then we will get you enrolled and you can start tomorrow." She said with a smile.
I walked out the school gates and jumped into my car and drove to the Inn, Betty was sitting behind the desk in the office when I arrived home. She had on a pair of blue glasses and had a cup of tea in one hand.
"Hey." I said with a smile.
"Oh, Hi dear, did you have a nice drive?" She asked looking up from her papers.
"Yeah, I dropped by Greendale High."
"Oh really?" She asked. I could hear she was a little shocked but also kind of happy.
"Yeah, this place isn't that bad, I might stay a while, but I was wondering if you would sign this papers for me for school." I said handing them to her. "They need a signature from someone older then me."
"Sure" I would love to." She said with a warm smile.
"Thanks."
I went to bed early that night; I was nervous and scared and kinda worried about tomorrow I have never been really good at making friends.
