We left at early in the morning and moved surprisingly quietly. Bilbo continued to sleep like a baby in his bedroom as we covered our tracks. I was amazed at how easily we made it seem like we were never here. Before we left, I noticed that Bilbo left the contract on the plush armchair. We quickly packed the ponies and began to ride out of the shire. Before we set off, Gandalf and I made a bet with a few of the dwarves that Bilbo would come. We each bet 3 shillings and everyone gloated about their odds. As I mingled with the dwarves, I noticed that Thorin kept giving me odd glances as he studied me. I didn't give him the satisfaction by acknowledging him.
We were making good time until I heard a familiar hobbit shout for us. Gandalf, Thorin and I stopped causing a chain reaction. Bilbo presented his signed contract to Balin who looked it over and approved it.
"EVerything appears to be in order. Welcome, Master Baggins to the company of Thorin Oakenshield." Balin said as he gave Bilbo a reassuring wink. Bilbo began to breathe easier and looked happy to join us. Thorin kept his scowl as he stared at a giddy Bilbo.
"Give him a pony." Thorin commanded as he began to resume the trek. I heard Bilbo try to protest before being hoisted onto a pony. Gandalf and I sensed his uneasiness so we went to the back to keep him company. The dwarves began to pass a money bag around as they paid their bets. Bilbo noticed this and began to question Gandalf about the commotion.
"What's that about?" Bilbo asked as I held a giant grin on my face.
"Oh, some of them took wages on whether or not you would come? Just an innocent game." I replied as my smirk grew bigger.
"Most of them bet that you wouldn't." Gandalf said filling Bilbo completely in on our game.
"And what did you think?" Bilbo asked innocently.
"Hmm...my dear fellow I never doubted you for a second" Gandalf answered as he happily collected our wins. Bilbo and I laughed at the sight of Gandalfs ruined credibility. However, our laughter was cut short by adorable sneezes from Bilbo.
"Ugh, horse hair. I'm having a reaction." Bilbo said as he rummaged through his pockets for a handkerchief. Eventually, Bilbo couldn't find it and called out for us to stop and turn around. The rest of the company looked at him like he was mad. Unfortunately, I couldn't help but look at him like that too since his request was ridiculous.
"What on earth is the matter?" Gandalf asked with slight irritation. Bilbo continued to rummage through his pockets for a while before answering.
"I forgot my handkerchief." Bilbo said. I noticed that Bofur was looking through his pockets which made me look at him puzzled.
'Here use this." Bofur shouted as he threw a filthy green cloth to Bilbo. The two of us looked at it oddly but I decided to thank Bofur on Bilbo's behalf. The company got a few chuckles in before Thorin commanded us to continue. As we traveled, Gandalf gave Bilbo a rousing speech in an attempt to toughen him up. We managed to make camp on an outcropping amongst the jagged mountains. I helped the twin princes start a fire while everyone set their sleeping bags, even going straight to bed. Kili kept talking to me at the fire while fili grabbed my bag and placed it between him and his brother at the fire. I gave both of them a kind pinch on the cheeks before volunteering for guard duty.
I went to sit on the cliff with my bow out , only to be followed by Thorin. I had expected him to ridicule me so I ignored him, until I heard a semblance of manners.
