"Alison...... Alison? ALI!"
The faces that were blurry are suddenly clear. Maxine and Elise leaning over me.
"Where am I?"
"The infirmary. You fainted after we told you the good news."
Oh, right. My heart stopped. Oh, I'm scrambling for an excuse.
"I was dehydrated on the way here, and I accidentally passed the nearest gas station, so I was really thirsty."
Elise seems to buy it, but Maxine doesn't seem too convinced.
The awkward silence that has fallen on us is finally broke by a someone's ringtone singing:
My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard, and they like it's better than yours....
"Oh, sorry, that's Eli's ringtone." Elise blushes and goes outside.
"That better be changed by the time the campers come!" Maxine yells as she runs away. Then, she focuses her attention back on to me.
"Wait, she can get calls? There's phone service?"
"Yep, we got service now... But that's not important. Why did you pass out?" Maxine does not like when people try to change the subject.
"I was dehy-"
"Bull, Allison, you're lying. What's the matter?"
I turn away. Stick to the lie Ali, stick to the lie. "I've been dehydrated a lot."
She raises an eyebrow, but then she gets up. "Come talk to me if you need me, Al. Other than that, you were out for a couple hours. It's eleven. Get back to your cabin."
I check my watch. 11:03.
"Right, will do."
I hop off of the counter, and walk back to my cabin.
On the way back, I hear Elise on the phone. "No, you hang up. That's not fair! Hang up! I will when you do.... One, two three.... You didn't hang up!"
She walks up to me, and continues like this.
Finally, I fake a migraine, and start cradling my head. "The pain!" Elise hangs up and comes to my rescue.
"You okay?"
"Yeah, my head just hurts a lot."
"Oh." Elise puts her arm around me, and I put mine around hers.
I feel different when I'm around her. Like two magnets, I'm attracted to her. (AN: corny, I get it... But it's a good ONE!)
"I really missed you, Ali. Takota wasn't the same without you and your witty, stereotypical self."
I open my mouth to argue, but then I realize it's not worth it.
"I really missed you too, Eli."
We stand silent outside of her cabin for a bit. It's nice; you can hear the crickets. But it's also awkward. "I should go.... In my cabin." She walks up her stairs, still looking at me. She trips on one and I catch her.
"Thanks. Well, g'nite Al!"
"Goodnight, Eli. Love you."
"I love you too!"
It makes me feel so good, her saying she loves me.
But only a friendly love.
I could change that, though.
