Solders of the Union surrounded
Not sure what to do.
Floating on a sea of thoughts,
Uncertainty clouding their minds
As people who were supposed to care,
People they may have called family,
Surrounded them.

What were they thinking?
Did they know what would happen
When they refused to back down?
What made them strong

A war started,
Did they know they-
Common people with guns-
We're apart of something bigger?
What were they thinking
When president Lincoln,
In a booming voice
Said we were to go to war?
What were they thinking?

As the first shots were fired
By their own family
And friends.
They refused to back down
Even after they lost.
They continued to fight;
To stay strong.
All from the first battle.
