Epilogue.
“You look lovely.” I said to Jace walking down the stairs.
She was wearing her deep red prom dress and Kat had decked her out with silver and diamond jewellery. Her hair was pulled back in a swirly bun out of her face.
“Thanks.” She giggled.
“Where is Mr. Fancy Dancy Prom Date Jay?” I asked looking around for him.
“Surprisingly it takes him longer to get ready than me.” Jace replied rolling her eyes.
“And just out of curiosity who is the father for the father daughter dance?” as if right on cue Max walked past me on the stair wearing a suit, I almost laugh out loud.
“She talked me into. I look like a bloody penguin.” He complained.
“A two hundred and seven five dollar plus labour penguin. So don’t ruin the suit.” Kat warned.
Max laughed. “No I’m serious. I swear to God if you ruin that suit I will cry then kill you. Or kill you then cry whichever I feel like.”
Jay ran down the stairs past me and looked at Jace. He turned around ran the other way past me. “Is he alright?” I asked as he ran past me once more.
“I’m sorry I was just making sure I wasn’t dreaming that this beautiful woman was my prom date.” He explained kissing Jace on the cheek.
“That was so freaking adorable it hurts.” I said to no one in particular.
“It is but I doesn’t compare to the girl I’m sitting next to.” Nathan whispered in my ear sitting next to me on the stairs.
“She does look amazing though.” I whispered back watching Jace, out of the corner of my eye, be twirled around by Jay.
“Yeah. Prom must take a lot of work to get ready you know the dress, the shoes, the hair, the nails, the jewellery, the makeup.”
“Since when do you know so much about the process it takes a woman to get ready for prom?” I asked looking at him.
“Kat went on a whole twenty five minute rant about it earlier. Some of the stuff just sticks with you.”
“Okay…Anyways it is too long of a process, that’s why I’m not going to mine.” I sighed leaning back.
“What? Why not?” Nathan leaned back so he could look me in the face.
“Because it’s too much of a hassle to get everything ready, and the dress is expensive, too expensive for something I’m only going to wear once. And because it’s just another school dance that people over pay for.”
“But it’s a special last over paying dance before you leave for University. I mean you are supposed to go with your special someone and have a really good time.”
“Yes but I can stay home and put in a movie to have a good time with you. And it costs me nothing but the effort of making popcorn and tea.”
“That’s not the point, i…”
“Addi can you take pictures?” Kat asked handing me her extremely expensive high end camera.
“Sure.” I pushed myself off the stairs and took about fifty of Kat recommended photos.
I handed the camera back to Kat after Jace, Jay and Max had left. “So what are your plans for the night?” she asked me handing me a cup of tea.
“Well I have a five foot by five foot sketch to finish up for work, I still have some exams to study for, I have paper work to do as well as a final tally of the paintings for the next art show. I think I’m going to watch a movie.”
“You are the biggest procrastinator I know.” Tom commented.
“Not procrastinating just putting the not fun stuff off until later.” I explained putting a DVD into the player.
“Where’s Seev?” I said suddenly realizing I haven’t seen him all night.
“He’s out with Sara.” Tom answered.
“Sara?”
“Yeah, you know the girl form the animal shelter. Shy, quiet, opened Fenton’s cage for us, ringing any bells?”
“Oh yes now I remember. Are they together or something?”
“If together means, me walking in on them kissing then yes, they are together.” Kat piped up.
“Do you walk in on everyone kissing Kat?” I asked her.
“I haven’t walked in on Max snogging Heather yet. But that’s mostly because he’s too embarrassed to bring her here. But it’s only a matter of time.”
The movie ended. Somehow we had managed to wedge all four of us on the small sofa in Kat’s workshop. My head rested on Nathan’s arm. Tom was leaning on me and Kat was curled up in Tom’s arms.
“Well that was a waste of two hours.” I stated turning off the television. “What do you want to do now?”
“I think we should go upstairs and crank music and dance like crazy.” Kat suggested. I’m not sure if she was serious but it seemed like a really good idea right now.
We raced up the stairs. Whether or not we knew what was happening I’m not sure. But we were having a good time. We were dancing to one of Kat favourite artist Karmin.
About an hour later the door opened and we stopped dancing so suddenly my phone flew off the counter.
“What the hell were you guys doing?” Jace looked at us as though we were crazy.
“I don’t know Jace but I hope it’s not contagious.” Jay muttered steering her out of the room.
“Sometimes I wonder why I live with you people.” Max followed them out of the room.
The four of us looked from one to another and burst out laughing. Every time we would stop laughing we would look at each other and it would start again.
“Addi I think your phone is beyond repair.” Tom handed my smashed phone.
“That’s fine it was acceint anyways. I needed an upgrade.”
Note to self, number two: When living in a house of boys plus Kat don’t leave breakable object on the counter.
THE END.
