Capper's pov

Capper glanced up at the angle of the sun, it was getting late. It wasn't that he lived far from the market place, it was just a hassle to navigate. He knew the streets well, it was the people who made it difficult. He had to be careful to avoid pick pockets and petty theives at every turn. Not to mention he had to keep an extra eye out for Verko's goons.

If he did happen to have the misfortune of running into Verko or any of his accomplices they'd demand he give them all the money he had on his person. Meeting Verko's weekly payments was hard enough without his goons taking all his money and making life more difficult than it already is. He was fairly sure that the confiscated money didn't even reach Verko. He had a strong hunch that once the money entered their pockets it stayed there. Those goons were an incredible pain in his side.

As he drew closer to home Capper felt a bit of relief that he had gone the entire day without bumping into any of them. He was almost to his front gate when he spotted something that made his heart sink. There, standing to the right of the gate, was a small, black and white mole. He didn't say anything, he just held out his hand like some self entitled gate keeper. Capper sighed and fished a few coins out of his pocket.

"Don't you ever take a break?" he sighed, dropping the coins into his hand.

The little mole just shoved the coins into his pocket and walked away. Capper shook his head, relieved that there wasn't anyone else he had to worry about. For now, all he had to worry about was how he was going to apologize to (Y/n). Hopefully they wouldn't be too upset. He wasn't sure why he was so concerned about how (Y/n) felt towards him, he'd scammed more than a couple of people without caring about how they felt afterwards.

But for some reason (Y/n) was different. He couldn't see why, they were just another Abyssinian, right? He was at the entrance of the mill now, almost to the passage that led to the trap door. He held his breath and took a step forward, anticipating what could happen next.

(Y/n)'s pov

(Y/n) looked up from what they were doing as they heard the sound of approaching footsteps. They sat up a bit taller as they heard the sound of the trap door opening. They turned to see Capper emerge from the entrance and felt a wave of relief, he had been gone for quite some time and had started to worry that something had happened to him. Relief quickly turned to joy when they noticed the bag of food he was carrying.

"You're back!" (Y/n) exclaimed," and you brought food!"

"Did you think I was going to abandon you in my own house?" Capper teased.

"Well you were really upset when you left and you were gone for such a long time, I was starting to get worried." (Y/n) admitted.

Capper just chuckled and started unpacking the food onto the table. (Y/n) watched him closely, trying to gauge what sort of mood he was in. He didn't seem too upset anymore, which was a relief, but they weren't sure it was a good time to bring up that "friend" just yet. Capper was starting to explain how to ration food out to (Y/n) but they could barely hear him.

"Hey Capper?"(Y/n) mumbled, interrupting him.

"What is it(Y/n)?" Capper replied, momentarily pausing.

"I'm really sorry that I upset you like that. I didn't know that bringing up you friend would make you so mad. I won't ask what happened and I'll try not to bring it up again. Its just that I, well I didn't mean to cause you so much distress."

Capper flicked an ear and grimaced internally, he knew this was going to pop up some time tonight. "Its alright(Y/n), you didn't know. I could have handled the situation better myself to be honest. Its just that someone I was really close to did something that hurt me. I still haven't forgiven them and I'm sorry that I expected you to understand something I hadn't told you about. I'm not ready to explain it fully but I felt like it was a good idea to give you a general idea."

(Y/n) nodded and shuffled their feet awkwardly. Though things had been patched up, sort of, there was still an uncomfortable feeling of tension in the air. It almost felt like that even though he hadn't been very specific, Capper had said more than he had wanted to.

"So, about rationing food,"(Y/n) started, changing the subject.

Capper started the explanation again, some what relieved that(Y/n) hadn't asked anymore questions. For what little remained of the day they went over the basics of food rationing. When they had finished Capper handed(Y/n) their rations for the night before suggesting that they get some rest.(Y/n) just nodded sleepily, still recovering from their trek in the desert, and quickly finished their meal. They wished Capper a good night before trudging over to their sleeping space and letting sleep overcome them.
