A few hours later...

Verko was growing impatient. Capper's weekly payments had been slowly getting smaller and smaller. It wasn't like the people in this town had gotten any smarter, why were his payments diminishing? If there was one thing Verko hated it was losing money. The only thing he hated more was runaway debtors.

Unfortunately for Chummer, that's exactly what he was. The pale grey tabby struggled to free himself from the grip of two of Verko's cronies. Verko himself had this twisted sort of grin on his face, enjoying the helpless look on his hostage's face.

"You have some nerve cat," Verko chuckled, "coming back here after that little trick you pulled. I'm not happy to see you, and I'm certain your former accomplice isn't thrilled either."

"Let me go," Chummer begged, "I don't have any money."

"Well, you'd better go get some. That pal of yours has been paying for your crimes and, if I remember correctly, you owe me a small fortune."

"What do you expect me to do, pull the money out of thin air?"

"I expect you to come up with something, and for your sake, you'd better do it quickly. I suppose you could do what Capper's doing and pay it off slowly over time, but he's been slacking lately and who's to say you won't do the same."

He paused, studying Chummer's face closely. Hopefully, he could get some sort of reaction by pulling Capper into the mix. If Chummer still had an inkling of concern for him he would start talking.

"You know I should do something about that. There has to be something he's hiding from me, something I can get behind." He paused, waiting for some sort of reaction, "Or I could just send the boys over..."

No reaction what so ever. Apparently they weren't on friendly terms anymore. Verko was done trying to squeeze anything out of him, if he had any money he wasn't giving it up. What a waste of time.

"We're done here," he declared, flicking his hand dismissively and walking away, "boys, have fun."

"Wait. Wait! WAIT!"

Verko paused, a satisfied grin forming on his face. Maybe this wasn't a total waste of time. Perhaps Chummer had "remembered" some spare change he had socked away. He turned back to the struggling Abyssinian and signaled his cronies to stop.

"I-I don't have any money, but I do have information."

"What?"

"You said you thought Capper was hiding something from you, I know what it is."

"...Go on..."

"He's hiding another Abyssinian. I've seen them with him a couple of times. They were on the roof together tonight, I think they mean something to him." Chummer blurted, desperately trying to save his hide.

This was very useful knowledge, as far as Verko knew the only two Abyssinians in Klugetown owed him money. The fact that Capper was hiding an entire person from him...

"How long have they been here?"

"A couple months? I don't know! They were here before I returned."

That would explain why Capper had seemed on edge lately. This person would also explain why his payments had been decreasing, it costs more to support two people than it does to support one. In other words they were making Verko lose money... He would have to "fix" that.

"Let him go," Verko ordered, "This isn't over yet cat. You've just saved yourself from a world of pain by saving me some trouble. You better start paying what you owe or you'll end up back here. I promise I won't be as lenient next time."

Chummer was released and Verko watched him scurry away. Once he had vanished from sight Verko's thoughts shifted elsewhere. A twisted smile spread across his face, he knew exactly what he was going to do to solve his little "problem".

Want to hear something scary? A couple of days ago I almost lost inspiration to continue this story. Blame Pokemon, it almost took over the creative part of my brain.

I wrote this chapter to show just how dangerous Verko is. He's a crime boss, he isn't afraid to hurt people.
