(Y/n) and Capper stared at each other from opposite ends of the table. Capper had told (Y/n) that he had to tell them something. What that something was (Y/n) could only guess. Whatever it was, it was making Capper uneasy. They had been sitting like this for the past twenty minutes when Capper finally found his voice.

"You were right." he stated.

"I'm sorry, what?"

"You were right," he repeated, "It isn't fair for me to keep you in the dark about this. Its time that I told you the truth about what happened with Chummer." he paused, "What I'm about to tell you has never been told to anyone else. I'm not sure I'm ready to relive this but it needs to be done."

Capper clenched his fist briefly and (Y/n) rested their hand on top of it, trying to offer some comfort. They leaned forward intently, ready to hear what ever Capper had to say. Capper took a deep breath and started to talk.

"I met Chummer when I was a kid. We both kinda bonded over the fact that we were both homeless orphan children. We were so close, it was almost like we were brothers. We would steal what ever we couldn't afford, so everything basically. I thought nothing could ever come between us, I was wrong.

It all started with the Misfortune Malachite. Chummer and I had thought it was our lucky charm. When we arrived at Klugetown we thought we might be able to trade it for something. The days after our arrival were full of scamming, pick pocketing, and petty thievery. It was like the townspeople wouldn't know a scam if it had hit them in the face. Despite all the success we were having we could barely afford anything to eat.

Eventually our shenanigans caught Verko's attention. He was going to punish us and told us that two cats could never make it on their own, but when he found out we had the Misfortune  Malachite his priorities shifted. Apparently it was worth much more than Chummer and I had ever imagined. We ended up making a deal with Verko, the malachite for an airship filled with everything two young adventurers could ever need.

When Chummer and I were settling in for the night Chummer asked me what Verko meant about the two of us never making it on our own. I told him I didn't know and that I was relieved that after the deal we would never have to steal again. Chummer wasn't as happy about that as I was. He wanted to keep on stealing, even saying that we would be the best thieves in the world. I told him I would rather just settle down somewhere nice and leave crime behind. I went to bed and thought nothing of our little conversation.

The next day Chummer handed me a bag that supposedly had the malachite in it and told me he was going to check out the ship. I reached into the bag to give Verko the stone but...." Capper paused, finding it hard to speak."It was a fake. He gave me a fake. While I tried to tell Verko I wasn't trying to scam him Chummer severed the airship's rope ladder and started to fly away. I managed to get on board before he got out of reach.

I tried to stop him but no matter what I said he wouldn't listen. He tried to fling me off the ship by turning sharply, knowing full well how high up we were. I ended up breaking a lantern, which set the ship on fire, and got tangled up in this coat," he motioned to the one he was wearing," I almost fell off the ship but I was lucky enough to catch hold of the railing. I begged Chummer to help me but he didn't even take a step in my direction. He told me that I was just going to leave him behind anyway, then he turned around and let me fall." Capper went silent for a minute and (Y/n) could see that he was trying not to cry.

"He let me fall to what should have been my death and left me with a life of debt. Now, after two years, he shows up at my door. How am I supposed to forgive him for ruining my life?" He took a shakey breath, tears brimming in his eyes. He swallowed audibly and tried to continue, "It just hurts you know? To have some one you trust betray you like that. And now its hard, *choke* its hard to trust people any more because you don't want to get hurt again."

Capper looked up at (Y/n), a tear slipping from his eye. "I don't want to be hurt again."

(Y/n) wordlessly got up from the table and wrapped their arms around him. They felt Capper tense at first before returning the hug. They stood there in silence for a minute before (Y/n) finally spoke up.

"You know, its okay to cry. I'm the only one here and I promise I won't judge."

Capper's grip tightened as he finally stopped trying to hold back the tears. He sobbed into (Y/n)'s shoulder, his body shaking with sorrow. (Y/n) gently rubbed his back trying to comfort him. They thought for a minute before they could find something to say.

"I promise I would never do something like that to you Capper. You can trust me, I promise."
