Chapter 3

I set my large, weighty book bag on the floor then took a seat in my assigned chair. I proceeded to take out my needed books and pencils and placed them on my desk. Just as I had placed my pencil down, ready to start class, the teacher had entered the room. Before he could speak, the intercom that connected to the entire building clicked on. The sound of the principal's low, and unamused sounding voice resounded in every student's ears.

"Would Senior, Y/n L/n please report to the main office. A man by the name of Nicholas Proffitt is requesting your assistance." Every student and the teacher turned to look at me. I sighed deeply before bending down to collect my books. After carelessly shoving my things in my bag, I left the room, grumbling to myself.

"First he took my sleep times, then halloween night, then christmas night, and now school hours?!" I huffed, realizing that I would have to walk from the left side of the school, on the fourth floor down to the right side of the first floor. Knowing how impatient Fury is, I entered a bathroom then took a portal down to the bathroom right next to the office. Before I exited the bathroom stall I had gone through the portal to, I listened to make sure there was no one else in the restroom. Once I was sure the coast was clear, I exited the tiled room and made the short walk to the office. Sighing once again, I pushed the wooden door open to be met with Fury disguised in a suit, instead of his usual trench coat.

Fury looked up at me, then turned to the vice principal. "Excuse me, I would like to talk to my client in private." He spoke coldly, which caused a shiver to run down the woman's spine. She timidly nodded her head before scampering out of the office. I turned to my boss, an eyebrow raised.

"Client?"

"I needed a cover. The best course was your lawyer in a lawsuit against your orphanage." He spoke quietly so that anyone trying to eavesdrop could not hear him. I nodded, agreeing that it was actually a pretty clever alibi.

"Anyways, why did you need me? I'm at school. I kinda need an education in order to succeed in life." He rolled his eyes at me.

"We have tutors at head quarters. But, we need your help."

"Really?!" I ask super sarcastically, causing him to send a glare my way.

"Quiet. Many of our agents are injured and are incapable of being sent on to the field for the next two days. Until then, you will sub in for them as back up. You are not to work alone or be first to enter. You will simply follow behind your group and act as extra help." I nod in understanding.

... "yes sir." I reply professionally. I grab my stuff then follow my boss out of the building. He nods to me, allowing me to lead the way into an alley so that I could open a portal. As soon as we stepped on the Helicarrier, Fury had rid himself of the suit and was back to wearing his long trench coat.

I took a step forward, but immediately backed up as a group of doctors rushed past me, pushing along a gurney with a bloodied body lying on it. "Oh my god," I mumble, covering my mouth with my hands.

"Get used to this sight. In this field of work, you must adjust to it or you will drag everyone else you work with behind." Fury said sternly, which caught my attention. I looked up at him, a dreary aura infecting the area as my e/c eyes studied his dark colored, scarred face. His uncovered eye snapped down at me, causing me to immediately turn gaze down to the floor. Silently, I followed behind the man towards the intel room, passing by doctor after doctor.

With each step, I started to regret my decision to join this organization even more. I knew that I could not make anything about my life public, even at work. There was even I chance that I would be forced out of my relationship with Peter. Something could happen to one of us, or both of us, or we need to split so as to keep the other out of our problems and safe from our enemies.
