Alllriiight. Here we are at the end! This is the last chapter of our long two part adventure with the Guardians. Hope everyone liked the story and I truly appreciate all the reads. This is great! Anyway, enjoy! :)
Turns out we didn't lose Peter after all. But we still lost a good friend. Rocket had given Yondu his last space suit and aero rig to use for Quill. Yondu had saved Quill and put the suit on him before they entered space. Within minutes Yondu took his last breath as he froze.
I had yelled, even screamed at Kraglin and Rocket to meet them where they were entering space so that nobody'd die. Kraglin had spewed some technical bullshit I didn't want to hear as tears threatened to spill down my cheeks. Even though Yondu was a pain in the ass, he was still a good guy. I didn't want to lose him, either.
But in the end, all my yelling and screaming didn't prevent the inevitable. Yondu still died and we can't change that. Everyone aboard the ship gathered around the table where Yondu's body laid as Peter gave a heart-warming speech about how Yondu was his real dad and a good person. I saw Nebula perched against the wall and we made eye contact for a brief moment before she took off. Gamora turned to me and I nodded me head. Go I mouthed to her. Gamora gently touched Peter's arm before following her sister. I hoped that they could work out their problems before it's too late.
"I am Groot."
Rocket nodded at his friend. "Yeah, he did call you Twig." I smiled and patted Groot's head. We put Yondu's body in the incinerator, as that's the proper 'burial' for those of us out in space. I stood quietly next to Peter as we watched the flames consume Yondu's body, until Peter turned to leave. Kraglin called out to him, stopping him in his tracks. "Peter, Yondu found this one day when we went junking. It's called a Zune. It's got three hundred songs on it."
Peters face was the definition of astonishment- his mouth hung open, his eyes were hugs, and his shoulders hung in disbelief. "Th-three hundred?" He stammered.
Kraglin nodded. "Figured you'd like it since your other one got smashed."
"Thanks, Kraglin. Oh hey! I got something for you, too." Peter reached behind him and held out Yondu's arrow. "Rocket found the pieces and reassembled it. I'm sure Yondu would want you to have it."
Kraglin's eyes filled with unshed tears as he pounded his fist against his chest. "Thank you, Quill."
"I am Groot." Groot tugged on my pant leg and I picked him up, following Peter to an area where there was a huge glass panel overlooking the galaxy. We sat down as Peter started playing his Zune. Cat Stevens voice came through the earbuds as he sand Father and Son. Immediately I started tearing up again as Groot went to grab the earbud. He pressed it to his head and his eyes widened. I smiled and held him close to me.
I heard blasts, which called me from my reverie and I raced over to the glass. "Everyone, look!"
The whole crew came over as we watched colorful fireworks light up the darkness of the galaxy. "They're all Ravagers. They came." Peter said in awe.
"It's a Ravager funeral." Gamora stated. Groot looked so happy to see the colors but all the excitement was getting to him. He let out a yawn and reached for Gamora who took him from my arms. As Father and Son continued to play, I let the tears fall as I watched more and more Ravagers appear for the funeral. Even though they had exiled him, he won back their respect and that's important. He wasn't alone after all.
With Ego defeated, there's no imminent danger. At least for now, anyway. I'm sure at some point the Sovereign will be coming for our heads but not anytime soon. After a few days of grieving, Peter seemed to have come to grips with the loss of his surrogate father but I could tell there were moments when he felt a little lost. And that's okay. I don't expect the guy to get over it so soon. In fact, I think he's handling it pretty well.
Kraglin's a Ravager through and through and declined our offer when we asked if he wanted to be a part of the Guardians of the Galaxy. He did, however, give us a lift back to Berhert and helped us fix up the Milano. With all of us working on it, the Milano was fully restored in three days (which I personally think is a record).
With the repairs done, we went our separate ways. But Kraglin told us if we ever needed help that he'd be there along with his fellow Ravagers.
A few days passed and we had made a few stops to pick up supplies and other miscellaneous things. Our lives were returning to normal, thank heavens.
I was in my room reading when Rocket came and knocked on my door. "Hey, (Y/N). Can I come in?" He asked timidly.
"Rocket, you can come in anytime you want." I gave him a bright smile as I placed the book on my desk. "What's up?" I noticed he was holding one arm behind his back but I didn't say anything to him.
"Well, now that we're out of danger and as of this moment nobody's trying to kill us...I thought...well," I could tell he was nervous and didn't pressure him to talk. I just sat on my chair patiently.
"I want to talk about us. I honestly didn't think that anything serious would happen between us, you know? Just flirting and whatever. The whole species thing, blah blah blah." He paused for a moment before continuing. "Turns out, you had my heart in your hands from the very beginning. If you feel the same way then, I want you to have this."
Rocket slowly pulled his hand from behind his back and revealed a little box. My heart pounded so hard I felt like one of those silly cartoons with the heart shape coming out of their chest. I held my breath as Rocket opened it up and a ring, the stone an exact match to my necklace, glistened in the light. I pressed both hands to my mouth.
Whistling drifted in from the hallway then abruptly stopped. "OH MY GAWD! IS ROCKET PROPOSING TO YOU?!" Peter jumped and pointed at us. "Oh my god he IS!''
"SHUT IT, QUILL! You're ruining my moment here!" Rocket hollered at him and shook a fist. Quill took off running down the hall shouting. "GUYS! Rocket's proposing to (Y/N)!"
Rocket rolled his eyes and I laughed. "What d'ya say, doll? I can't imagine being anywhere in the galaxy without you..."
"YES!" I shouted and gripped him in a huge hug. He startled a little bit but then laughed before returning the hug, still holding the box in his hand. The ring was a perfect fit and I promised myself I would never take off the necklace or the ring. I looked at my hands now held in his. All four of the silver rings sparkled back at me in the low light. All four resembled different parts of my life and I would never take any of them off. They were all a part of me, just as much as Rocket and the rest of the crew were a part of my family. I smiled down at Rocket and we embraced, tears of joy streaming down my face.
We've been through a lot together, sometimes it feels like it's been a lifetime, but I couldn't ask for a better group of friends. We'll always be together and we'll always have each other's backs no matter what.
Through thick and thin, we'll always win.
