Chapter 15
Sighing, I threw my bag past me and into the passenger seat. I heaved myself into my truck and started it up, slamming the door shut behind me. All around me, people were walking and talking at the same time towards their designated vehicles. The skies were clear as usual, and the air was crisp with a tinge of humidity. I turned my head to back out, but pressed the break at the last second because there was a group of students fooling around directly behind the bed of my truck. They shoved each other around like the idiots they were, trying to prove to one another who was strongest. I decided to give them a few minutes to collect their wits, but that proved to be useless. I sighed and honked the horn really loud. All of them jolted upright and peered through the window, trying to get a good look at me. I shook my head and started backing up even though they hadn't moved yet. I wasn't patient today.
As my truck rolled backwards, they gradually cleared the way for me. They could now see my face clearly through the side windows. They just stared wide-eyed at me once they realized it was indeed the school's freak who honked at them. I just smirked and drove off, my tires actually squealing against the road. Stupid teenagers, I thought.
On my way home from school, I stopped by a gas station to fill my tank up. It didn't take long, being that I was strangely the only car there, so I got home pretty fast. I pulled into the driveway, and parked behind my Mom's small Honda. I hopped out and made my way over to the front door. As I unlocked the door and swung it open, a note fell to the ground. I blankly stared at it for a few seconds. Before reaching down to get it, I looked both right and left to make sure no one was hiding in the bushes as a prank of some sort. I hesitantly grabbed the note, mentally knowing it couldn't be from my Mom. She never left notes, and if she did, they were either on the fridge or the counter. Not in the crevice of the front door. Besides, she was home. I skimmed the note quickly:
Be ready by 6. -Brandon.
That's all I got? Seriously? No specifics? I huffed and suddenly felt conscious of myself and my surroundings. I rushed inside and closed the door behind me, locking it for good measure. I swiftly pulled out my phone and called Brandon's cellphone. He picked up on the first ring.
“Your coming,” he clearly announced into my ear, hanging up quickly after. I pulled the phone away from my ear and stared at it in shock. I slowly shook my head.
I sighed heavily and shoved my phone into my pocket. Boys, I thought glumly. I threw my backpack onto the couch, my Mom staring at me from a distance in her special recliner chair with a gaze that told me she was concerned for my well-being. I sprinted up the stairs two-at-a-time, not in the mood for explaining who I was talking to and what I was talking about. I closed my bedroom door behind me and locked it in case she decided to interrogate. Pulling my phone out again for a second, I saw it was close to five O'clock. Great, I only had an hour of time to myself. That boy was going to drive me crazy.
I walked over to my bed and plopped myself onto it, my face shoved into the soft cotton of my pillow. What was I supposed to do since I had already finished my homework? I flipped over and sat crisscross-applesauce. My room was completely finished and the tarps were already back in the garage, as well as the small ladder. It looked a lot better now that I wasn't seeing the same boring white color everyday. I felt a buzz inside my pocket and pulled my phone out. It was a text from Sam.
How's it going?
I texted back, saying, Crappy. I wish you were here.
The next thing I knew, my phone was ringing. I looked at the caller-ID and it was Sam. No surprise.
“Hey,” I said after picking up.
“Hey,” he responded, sounding a little worn down.
I laughed a little. “So, why'd you call? You could have just texted me.”
