Things happen quickly after a murder. Teachers and students alike started flooding the forest. John stood to one side with Johanna Marstone clinging to his arm. Madame Pomfrey came over once the body was removed and gave a blanket to both John and Johanna.
"What did you see? About the body, I mean," said a voice at John's shoulder making him jump. John spun round to face Sherlock.
"Erm..." John started "He, errr...Thomas had a crossbow bolt in the small of his back," John faltered. Sherlock looked at him expectantly.
"I didn't see anything else," John mumbled blushing. Sherlock grumbled and shut his eyes. John felt bad that he couldn't help him.
"I s-saw someone in the trees, just as-as I found..." Johanna broke in to fresh sobs of tears. Sherlock's eyes snapped open.
"Who? What did he look like? Was he a student or a teacher or a person you hadn't seen before?" Sherlock fired the questions off without giving Johanna a chance to reply.
"I couldn't really see. He looked like a student, he w-was very small and had brown hair,"
Sherlock sighed. "Short, brown hair? There are a lot of young boys who are short with brown hair!" He abruptly stopped and began looking around. Johanna watched him, confused.
"Do you remember Carl Powers?" John asked. She nodded slowly. "In his diary it said that you told him to go swimming. Is that true?" She frowned.
"No. I told him he should practise more but I never said that he should go swimming, especially not at night,"
"Do you know if he had any enemies?"
"Probably, he did bully some of the kids, especially Quentin Hedley," Before John could continue asking questions Professor McGonagal ushered them back to the castle.
Once they got back inside, Sherlock pulled John to the side. There were crowds of students and teachers alike and the atmosphere was tense. Who was killing students? It was obviously murder because it's not likely that you'll accidentally shoot someone in the back with a crossbow.
"We need to find Quentin Hadley," John said "Maybe we should tell Dumbledore, he could be in danger,"
Sherlock nodded grimly and nodded towards where the Headmaster was standing.
"No, Quentin is not in danger. I think he may have something to do with the murders,"
With that, Sherlock strode over to Dumbledore and John watched them exchange a few words before Dumbledore stepped back shaking his head. John hurried over.
"Mr Holmes, you do realise how serious this accusation is,"
"Of course, but I do believe that I am right,"
"Do you have any evidence?"
"No, but if you let me talk to him then I am sure I will get sufficient evidence to prove me right,"
Dumbledore didn't reply. He stared into Sherlock's eyes and Sherlock stared back.
"Unfortunately, I think you should trust him Sir," Mycroft stated. Sherlock frowned at Mycroft.
"Very well, Mycroft. Bring Mr Hadley to my study," Dumbledore said. He gestured for Sherlock and John to follow and began to walk to his study.
