Races were a big thing in the newsboy's lives. Especially to those who decided to befriend Racetrack, who would drag all of his buds along with him
So, naturally, all the newsboys would make their way over to the race track, place their bets, and enjoy a race.
If they were lucky, they would win some money off of a horse, but it usually wasn't much. Especially if you only placed small bets of a few cent, like Davey.
(Y/N) did not usually attend these races. No, she saw no reason to go to them when she could be out carrying the banner. Besides, who cared about some dumb race? Not her.
That morning, the lodging center was buzzing. The boys were all beyond excited, because today was a big race and lots of them had hope in a certain horse named Marule. Marule was fast and nimble, similar to her jockey - a well brought up man of thirty years.
The boys were preparing to head out, when Crutchie noticed (Y/N) and her dog exiting the building.
"Ay, (Y/N)! Wait' up!" He called out, hobbling over to her.
(Y/N) turned her head, cocking an eyebrow.
"You need something?" She asked cautiously. She didn't do well with people stopping her before work.
"Where yous off too?" Crutchie asked with a smile that spread like butter.
(Y/N) sighed, adjusting the strap on around her shoulder and gently stroking Lilac ear.
"Im off to the same place I go every day. Work." She said, completely monotone.
Crutchie frowned. Was she not going to the race? It's not like he cared or anything, but a part of him hoped that (Y/N) was going. She was good company when the boys talked about stuff he didn't bother to dwell on.
"Y'aint comin' to da race?"
(Y/N) shook her head, sliding her hands into her pockets. "I find that junk pointless."
"Aw, come on (Y/N), it aint all bad!" Crutchie protested. "Just' give it a shot!"

(Y/N) grumbled as she walked alongside the other newsboys, looking down with her cap pulled on, shrouded half of her face in darkness.
Lilac would occasionally growl, but it didn't bother (Y/N). She was used to it by now, having her at her side day and night.
The boys looked at (Y/N) cautiously. She never spoke to anybody, now she suddenly comes to the race with them? Seemed suspicious.
"Ay, uh, Crutchie," Jack whispered to his friend with the crutch. "Who invited her?"
"I did." Crutchie said, nonchalantly.
Jack groaned.
This would be a long day
A/N:
I'm so sorry that this chapter is terribly short. I would have written more but my mental health is once again getting off track. Sigh. anyways, new chapter will hopefully be up soon.
