PART ONE
The hall like, any other in my fathers castle, was dark and our only source of light came from the candles that lined the burgundy walls every centimetre or so. Katherine held my hand as we traipsed down the hallway alongside Alex, who had a stern expression plastering his pale face. He looks like that when he is thinking, deeply and it was a sign not to disturb him if you valued your voice. But his expression didn't seem to worry Katherine as she asked " Will your daddy be able to find my mummy?"
"I'm not sure, but he should be able to. He's smart like that." I answered.
"Wow, J, was that almost a compliment? To our father? He must really had changed these past, how long has it been? A year or two?" Alex chimed in clearly shocked by my description of our father.
"5 years and 7 months." I said, quietly.
"Wow, that long, huh? It feels like only a year. Time fly's' when your having fun, I guess." he sighed.
"For some." I muttered, but he still heard me.
"Look, sis, its not my fault dad's now turned to you to succeed him. How was I suppose to know that when I said 'no' it went straight down to you?"
"Seriously?! It's common sense Alex! First the eldest and then the next by years, and considering there's only two of us, I would've thought that would have been simple enough to understand. Even for you." I snapped, stopping in my path. Alex and I didn't normally argue, but ever since I became bound to the Elder Soul Stone on my thirteenth birthday and our fathers successor, I've always been cross with my brother. I loved him still, of course. And I admire his choice to travel instead of being stuck in this place; but we both knew if he didn't stay, I would have to unless our father remarried and had another child, which was unlikely considering the only company he gets nowadays is the dead and me and , on a very rare occasion, Lythan, the wild souls leader/commander. Any animal soul with a true wild side or sometimes even people, if they are bad enough, Lythan takes care of them . He's part wolf and man; representing both the craziest and wildest sides of creatures. Lythan was alive once but as what or whom no one knows but he is a rare case... Lythan remembers glimpses of his old life and often tells me stories of it. 'It's curious,' I say to him every time, 'how each soul reacts differently to death and what lies next.' And he replies simply ' Very.'
As sad as it may seem, Lythan is my best and only friend which, don't get me wrong he is amazing, however, is partly the reason to why I wanted to attend a human, upper world school for a change; to make new friends, much to my fathers discontent.
"Did I say something wrong?" a timid voice asked, breaking my glaring contest with Alex.
"Not at all, Katherine. Why would you think that?" I asked, crouching down to her height.
" Well, I spoke and then you two started fighting. That's what always happens!" She exclaimed.
"Okay, okay. Take a deep breath Katherine , ready?" I motioned for her to copy my actions as I took a deep breath. "Better?" , She nodded.
"What did you mean, Katherine?", Alex asked her also kneeling to her eye level, "'That's what always happens?'"
"My mummy and daddy used to shout a lot at each other. It was very loud."
"Who said it was your fault?"
"He did!"
"Who Katherine? Who said it was your fault?" I asked, a lump slowly rising in my throat from fear of her response.
"Uncle Jonny!" She exclaimed, sadly.
"Jonny? Jonny?" Alex began to mumble.
"What?" I asked.
"Hang on- Katherine was Uncle Jonny's last name Rush? Jonny Rush?"
"Yeahuh!"
" Wait!," I jumped up, "Jonny Rush who died two weeks ago and was sorted to Lythan? Jonny Rush who was taken by his own brother due to him having an affair with his wife?!"
"Yep- Sounds like it !" Alex confirmed my concern.
"Yeahuh! That's what mummy and daddy were arguing about before we went to the lake and I lost them. Can we find your daddy now to find my mummy?" Katherine asked, almost pleading.
"Yes- Of course. But Katherine?" I asked, taking her hand as we began to walk towards the dinning room, once more.
"Yeahuh?"
"How did you know that is what they were arguing about?"
"They were being very loud!"
"Hmmm..." Something didn't feel right with Katherine's story or Jonny Rushes. I was about to tell my brother of my discomfort when a shadow ahead of us blackened out all light the candles emitted.
"Jinx? Who is this?" it growled, smoothly.
