"Oh, hey Luke." I smiled, acting as if I had not seen him as I passed right by him.
He returned a teeth-baring smile that gave me a few butterflies. "Is right now an okay time to talk? Or will Mike pop out of no where and take you away?"
I chuckled nervously. "Um, no, right now is good."
"Cool," he lead me to the corner of the outside hallway, where nobody was standing except for the girls from my English class down where Luke was previously standing, who began to talk to themselves. He paused before he talked again, I could tell he was thinking through his words. "I just, um, I'm sorry about last night."
His words took me by surprise and made me gasp in response. "Are you serious? I'm the one who should be apologizing! I was a total bitch to you yesterday."
"Well, I tried to push you into telling me something you didn't have to. It's not your fault I did that, you had all the rights in the world to deny me."
He looked into my eyes with such sincerity I couldn't look away, which was bizarre; I normally hated eye contact because I felt vulnerable and self conscious. But I was so mesmerized by Luke Hemming's bright blue eyes I didn't want to stop looking at them.
He took baby steps closer towards me.
"I was still a bitch though," I said, unsure of what to do with my body.
He grabbed my hands in his; an act I would normally feel embarrassed by in front of all of my peers, including the girls from my English class not far away, but those worries left my mind as our torsos touched.
"Don't worry about it, babe." he whispered as he leaned his face into mine.
I closed my eyes and could feel his breath on my cheek, both of us breathing like we had just jogged a lap.
"What are we doing?" I breathed.
He kept his face close to mine. "Can I kiss you?"
His words sent a chill down my spine, creating more butterflies in my stomach. Is this okay? Is this what people do after meeting a day before? Of course I want to, he's so sweet and beautiful, but there was so many things wrong with it.
My heart was pounding, and I knew he could feel it. I had never kissed anybody before, will he think I'm a bad kisser? I know he's kissed girls before, I mean he's had to have had tons of girlfriends with how good looking he is.
"I-I've never done, um, this before," I admitted, slightly pulling away.
He moved his hand from my wrists to my cheek, pulling me to him, connecting our lips. At first, I wasn't sure what I was supposed to do, and Luke could tell.
"Move your lips," he whispered. "And open them a little."
I did as he said, and the experience was exhilarating. His lips were so soft and lovely in contrast to his cheek that had a little stubble on it, tickling my face.
I was unsure of where to place my hands, so I did as I had read in multiple romance novels and ran my fingers through his hair.
"Oh my God," he whispered into my mouth.
I pulled away, unsure if his reaction was positive or negative.
"No, no, no, no." he took my hands and placed them back on his head. "Please keep doing that."
"I'm sorry, I just, I'm not sure if I'm doing a good job?" I said, unsure.
"You're perfect, babe." he whispered and began to lean in again.
"Damn, Luke. You sure have lowered your standards." a girl's voice said loudly towards us.
He sighed, blowing air on my face. "Shut the hell up, Danica."
I looked over his shoulder and saw a girl with dark brown hair crossing her arms, standing in the middle of two blonde girls, imitating her.
Luke took his fingers under my chin and moved my face so I was looking at him again, but I avoided his eyes. I was embarrassed; I just shared one of the most intimate moments I had ever experienced with a boy - who I met yestereday - in front of three girls who for some reason have a problem with me.
"Maybe we shouldn't have done this ..." I trailed off, turning my face.
"Hey," he said, grabbing my shoulders, forcing me to stay put where I was standing. "Did you enjoy yourself?"
I nodded my head, still refusing to make eye contact with him.
"Good. I thought it was fucking amazing, and I'm not going to let fucking Danica ruin it!" he shouted the last part of the sentence.
"Dick," I could hear them saying to each other, walking away to where the rest of the school was spending their lunch break.
Luke let go of my shoulders and sighed, closing his eyes for a few seconds, and reopening them with a smile. "Do you want to get out of here?"
"Where?"
"Here. Like, school. Let's get the hell out of here so we can hang out." he grabbed my hand and pulled me through the doors we were standing by.
"Wait, can't we get in trouble for this?" I protested.
"No, Juniors and Seniors are allowed to leave campus for lunch. And we're in luck, since we're both Juniors."
We continued through the front doors of the school, into the student parking lot.
"How did you know I was a Junior?" I questioned.
"You're in my mom's Junior English class, aren't you?" he snickered.
Luke drove for about twenty minutes before he pulled into the driveway of a very populated In n Out. I had heard of the chain before, and knew you could only get it on the western coast of America.
"You're in for a treat," Luke said as he pulled around to the entrance of the drive through. "You like hamburgers, right?"
"I love them!" I answered with enthusiasm. Maybe too much enthusiasm, I blushed in embarrassment, probably sounding like a pig to Luke.
He chuckled as he ordered for us. I pulled my wallet out of my school bag and opened it. I groaned when I found only a few coins.
Luke looked over and shook his head. "No, I'm paying, put that away."
Sighing, I placed my wallet back in my bag. Although I always accepted, I hated when boys paid for me. I felt like I was taking advantage of their company by making them pay for my expenses. "Thank you."
I was unsure if our meal was priced well; I wasn't used to American dollars or their equivalence to Australian currency.
Luke pulled the car into a parking space after he was given our food in a white paper bag, smelling delicious.
As he handed me my hamburger, he asked, "Has anyone been mean to you at school?"
I hesitated, the girl Danica came to mind, her and her friends' rude comments about me yesterday played through my mind.
"These girls in my second period, they, uh, were saying rude things about what I was wearing yesterday." I admitted.
"Second period? My mom's class? Who was it?" I could feel him getting angry, as if he already knew who it was.
"The same ones you were talking to before we, um, kissed and stuff."
He huffed. "Fucking Danica, I swear to God," he took a deep breath to calm himself. "I'll deal with her." he grumbled.
"Please don't," I begged. "I don't want to bring any more attention to myself."
He groaned in response, digging into his hamburger. I did the same, and was overwhelmed by the wonderful taste. The combination of the toasted bun, to the crunchy onions and lettuce, with the cold tomato that contrasted so well with the warm burger and melty cheese.
"Wow," I admired.
"Welcome to California, babe."
