Poor Michael.

He had no idea what was going on; all he knew was that he kissed the new girl in school he had been helping around and grew to like. He knew she spent the weekend with his ex-best friend, who previously slept with a girl they both liked, but he didn't know his ex-best friend and this girl he likes shared many kisses, one of them being this girl's first.

Michael only knew that this girl possibly caught a cold, and that's why she didn't come to school today, not that this girl spent hours crying and screaming over the mess she made between two ex-best friends, Michael not even knowing he was in it.

I felt horrible being this girl to Michael. But my cowardly and "what he doesn't know won't hurt him" attitude prevented me from telling him anything, other than,

I'll be back at school tomorrow, let's hang then.

I looked significantly better the next morning; I was able to cover up the evidence of my emotional episode two nights before with makeup and a smile.

I put together an easy outfit - an acid-washed denim mini dress with black platform sandals - and threw my hair up in a ponytail and ran out the door. I woke up late, giving me no time to eat or, more importantly, drink coffee.

I made it to school in time to run to my locker quickly before my first class to grab what I needed from it. As I closed it and began my trek to class, hands were placed on my shoulders from behind and I was spun around, getting in the way of everyone walking towards us.

"Michael," I half groaned, not wanting to sound rude after not seeing him for so long, but annoyed that he wanted our dramatic reunion to take place in the middle of the hallway.

He didn't say anything, just hugged me tight, which I returned, and kissed me on the cheek as he pulled away. My face burned red at the public display of affection from someone I did not want to share it with. I blinked at him as he stared at me, smiling.

My heart was beating fast and butterflies fluttered in my stomach, but I didn't know why. I didn't want to get giddy from a touch from Michael; this was why I disliked this whole situation with Luke and him. I didn't know what to feel or why I was feeling things and it was screwing with my head. I didn't actually have romantic feeling towards Michael but my body was reacting like I did. It was all very confusing.

"Michael," I said again. "I should've cleared things up earlier,"

His face dropped, making my heart ache. "Cleared ... what up?"

"I was hoping to keep our relationship at, um, a friendly level." I somehow got the courage to be forward with what I wanted to say, and felt powerful.

"Oh, oh." he coughed and shifted his weight nervously. I could tell he was embarrassed. "I just thought ... okay. I'm so sorry."

"No, no. You've been so kind to me, you have nothing to be sorry about." I smiled at him, noticing the hallway was beginning to thin out. "I'm going to go to class now, see you at lunch?"

"Lunch, yeah," he nodded, furrowing his eyebrows. "Okay,"

Michael met me on the grass where I had sat on Monday, sitting across from me. He bought me a slice of pizza and a Gatorade. I smiled at his generosity and took the small lunch gladly; my stomach was empty.

I had a slight headache from the lack of caffeine in my system but I ignored the annoying pain and engaged in small conversation with Michael; it seemed like he had pushed aside the awkwardness of earlier today and decided to enjoy the rest of his day.
