My hoodie and leggings couldn't entirely block the sharp wind the walk from my front door to Ashton's car. I was relieved when I opened his car door and a cloud of heated air escaped, tickling my chilled skin.
I was met with an overly-happy looking Ashton, wearing a wide grin. I raised an eyebrow at him. "So ...?"
"I couldn't sleep!" he chuckled. "Why waste a perfectly good night laying in bed?"
"That's a very good point, except I'm grounded." I said. Ashton began the drive down my street, onto the main road.
"For what?" he asked, turning down the radio slightly. I looked towards his hand to see it was 3:41.
"Um," I hesitated; I didn't want to explain to Ashton I lied about where I was last night, and that my parents weren't aware of my personal relationships with him or Luke. I was slightly embarrassed, and it was a long story. "I didn't do the dishes before I left school yesterday."
"So you're saying if we get caught it will be twice as bad than if you got caught on a normal night?" he furrowed his eyebrows, keeping his eyes in front of him.
"Basically," I huffed. "but I'm over it. They won't know I'm gone, we just have to make sure I'm home before 7 or so."
"Perfect," he smiled. "Is the beach okay?"
I had never seen anything more beautiful in my life.
Watching the sky transition from a dark navy, cluttered with little stars to a collection of pastels surrounding the sun on the horizon of the Pacific Ocean was an exhilarating experience. Ashton and I sat shoulder to shoulder, facing the water in silence. The change of scenery happened quickly, but it will be painted in my mind forever.
"I never really paid any attention to the morning sky before today," I whispered. "I regret never watching it until now."
"This is better than sleeping, don't you think?" he snaked his arm around my torso.
"Yeah, it is." I pushed the home button on my iPhone to check the time, 5:52. I sighed, wishing I could sit on the cold sand forever, without time progressing. I wanted to stay in that perfect moment, where the sun wasn't completely risen yet, so part of the sky was dark, but the rest was brightly colored.
Ashton lit a cigarette; I watched as he took a drag. It was so picturesque; Ashton's profile was perfectly outlined from the lingering darkness casting a shadow on his jawline. His curly hair lost most of it's normally loose ringlets from lack of proper washing, but it added to his whole look.
As he blew the smoke from his mouth, I stole the cigarette from his fingers and took a much needed drag. He hummed a giggle and watched me. I tried to do something cool with the smoke in my mouth but it just came out as a cloud, and my efforts made me look borderline crazy, sparking a real laugh from Ashton.
"Time for you to go back to bed," he chuckled and pulled me up by my arm. "and give me back this," he snatched the cigarette from my mouth just as I blew a ball of smoke into his face.
In fear of my parents getting up early, I slipped in my room from my window that was thankfully built close to the ground. I closed it quietly and stood still to try to hear any signs of movement throughout the house, and thankfully was met with silence.
I sighed and rubbed my eyes, feeling the crusty mascara on my lashes from last night I never took off. I walked to my desk and grabbed a makeup removal wipe from my top drawer, scrubbing the black around my eyes and the bronzer and blush from my cheeks.
After I threw the dirty wipe in my small trash can, I crawled into my bed, snuggling into my comforter, instantly falling asleep.
"Taylor, Taylor," Someone was shaking me.
