"Tell me about your home."
"My home?"
"Yeah, like, Australia. What's it like there?" Luke uncrossed his legs and stretched them across his bed.
I sipped coffee Luke made for us and cleared my throat. "Well, it's not what you think. There's this idea that kangaroos and koalas roam everywhere, along with deadly insects. I've seen a kangaroo at a zoo once, but never anywhere near where I lived."
Luke chuckled and nodded his head, encouraging me to continue talking.
"Sydney is absolutely beautiful. I adore the city. Cities in general always excite me, because everything is always moving so fast, even at night. Like that saying, 'the city never sleeps', it's completely true! We lived outside of the city, though, in the suburbs. Very cute houses, neighborhoods." A pang of homesickness hit me in the pit of my stomach. I swallowed it down with my hot coffee and continued.
"In America, schools only make you wear uniforms if your school is private, but back home, every school required uniforms, even public government schools." I shook my head at the disgusting rule. "I always hated wearing them, because I looked like everybody else. I couldn't stand out in any way, or show people who I was. All anyone ever saw me as was another faceless student."
"I had a really cute red car back home. I loved my car, I would drive everywhere, just to pass time. If I was sad, I would jump in my car and blast music and drive around town. I always feel liberated while listening to music, because you live in someone's world for a few minutes and forget about your own." I sighed. "But my car had to stay home. I mean ... I think I wouldn't be able to drive here anyway since it's so different."
Luke laughed again, nodding his head. "I'd like to go there sometime."
"Really?" Australia didn't seem that exciting to me, especially talking about it, it just seemed normal and anti climatic. "Why?"
He shrugged, finishing off his cup of coffee. "Something new."
My father called me later, explaining he and my mother had to go on a last minute business trip to San Diego. He told me to ask "Danica" if I could stay the night at her house again, or if I didn't want to do that, there was a spare key under the plant by our front door. He said him and my mother would be back by Tuesday and that he left $200 on our kitchen counter for whatever I needed.
"So ... do you want to go home?" Luke asked. We were still on his bed, four cups of coffee and many conversations later.
"Do you want me to go home?" I really didn't want to take advantage of Luke anymore than I already had, but I wouldn't mind if he invited me to stay just a little longer.
He crawled across his white comforter to reach me, staying just centimeters away from my lips. "Hell no."
Even though I had done it once, or twice I suppose, before I was still nervous about kissing Luke. As he brought his lips to mine, my heart sped up and my hands began to sweat and shake and I didn't know what to do with the rest of my body.
Luke placed his hands on my crossed legs and gently squeezed, causing me to suck in a breath of air. He hummed a laugh into my mouth, squeezing again.
"Put your hands in my hair again," he whispered, and I did as he said; I would follow any directions to make sure I was doing this whole thing correctly.
I snaked my hands around his neck and upwards, running my fingers through his blonde hair.
He took his hands off of my knees and wrapped them around my torso, pulling us down on his bed so I was on top of him. I giggled at the cliche scenario.
