"But mom, I don't want a pet ." I groaned. My parents brought me to a place where people can adopt different animals. "Yes you are." Mother spat back. She wanted me to get a pet as an early 17th birthday gift. It was definitely a gift I can't refuse. Mom and dad are archaeologists, and they're always away so I'm on my own all the time. But I don't mind. I have friends and neighbors keeping me company.

"Just go in the shelter and pick one." Dad said, unlocking the car door so I can go out. I pushed the lock back down and crossed my arms. I looked at the window and observed the building. This place was huge: there is one side for dogs; another for cats; then another one for birds and so on.

"I'm staying here." I crossed my legs and took my phone out, opening a text message I received from Chloe. We always talk but she doesn't really hang out with me. I wouldn't call her a close friend.

"I beg to differ, young lady." Dad said, turning around to grab my phone. My first instict was to pull my arm back, and I trusted my instincts. I dodged my father's attempt to grab a hold of my phone and gave myself a high five. High five, Allison Cooper.

"We'll consider getting you  a car if you get out of here and choose a dog." Mom said and my eyes instantly lit up. A car! I didn't get one when I turned 16 because I was failing some classes. "Deal. But I didn't bring any money for adoption fees." I said, opening the door and letting the cold breeze hit my bare legs. I was only wearing a pair of shorts and a shirt. It was fairly warm outside but since I live in Canada, it's always cold. Poor us.

Mom rolled down the winder from the passenger seat and held out a few green rectangular plastic papers. Money. I counted the money on the way to the entrance. It was $200. I never knew adopting would cost this much.

"No small dogs!" Mom called out from the window as I walked towards the entrance. I raised my hand up as a wave to my mom to let her know I heard her. I stood in front of the door, reading a paper that was stuck on the entrance door

Warning! To enter the shelter: Children MUST be accompanied by adults AT ALL TIMES. Animals running/flying around the building is a possibility.

I entered the door with a sigh. I don't want to be responsible for the life of another living creature. I can't even take care of myself and I have to take care of a dog? No.

A man who looked like he's in his late 40s walked up to me. "May I help you?" He asked in a polite voice. I nodded, "Yes, please."

"My parents outside wants me to get a guard dog. They're always out of town and they want me to have a protector or whatever. Just a big dog." I said with a slight exaggeration on big. The man nodded and took his glasses. He walked over to the counter and opened a drawer full of papers. Great. I'm going to do paperwork.

"If you can fill out the first page, I'll let you in the dog shelter. Any breeds you are interested in?" He said, handing me the papers. I shook my head. "Not one that comes into mind at the moment."

I read the agreement papers quickly and filled up the blanks that I needed to write.

I was halfway through the form when the man looked over my shoulder, taking a glance on the form.

"Please do change it." He said with a displeasing look. A wry smile was on his lips. I giggled, crossing out my answer and replacing the "sex"  to female.
