You'd think with how beautiful the day was, people would be out everywhere, filling the Capital streets like they almost always did. Instead of that happening, most stayed indoors with their windows locked shut, closing them off from the outside world.
Other than the homeless and a few wanders, guards occupied the area, their boots creating a clicking beat as they marched to show their power. Over every guard's shoulder hung a black cloth. It wasn't necessarily a law, but a custom. The day a funeral was held for a Royal Family member, many would wear some shade of black to show respect.
The caste curtains were to be closed along with the large gates. Life inside was just as dead as it was in the Capital. The hallways were silent, dark, and lonely. No one felt like talking after burring their young princess. There wasn't much to say anyways...
The King had hide himself away in his study as usual, seeming to shake Brook's death right off his shoulders. Sienna and Ethan sat in the main parlor together, Ethan's arm draped over his twin sister's shoulders while tears ran down her cheeks.
The only person who was walking around the castle was (Y/n). She was constantly moving, not able to rest for a second. Every maid she pasted asked her if she was alright, but she didn't answer. Even Ms. Mcneadly's stern words fell upon deaf ears.
The Princess was determined. She was so determined that she echoed out the entire world, her mind racing through different ways she could ask guards and knights who had the keys to her lover's chains. Nothing she thought of was good enough. There was no way someone would simply hand over keys to the chains that held back a killer, at least, who they thought was a killer.
She sat in her dark room, staring at the ceiling with tears in her eyes. She was becoming desperate. Part of her wanted to march up to the King or her siblings, demanding them to let Link go or...or what? What could she possibly threaten that would make them listen?
The door of her room opened, however, she payed no mind to it. She simply closed her eyes, praying whoever it was that they'd go away, leaving her to think.
The soft sound of footsteps lead over to her bedside, the person pausing before speaking," Princess (Y/n)...?"
The voice didn't nothing to fix her mood," go away. I'm busy thinking."
"If there's anything you need, anything at all, I'm happy to help."
"Is this my friend talking or my knight?" This made Liam frown, his eyes directing to the side.
"...You're friend..."
"I don't have the time for you to keep switching sides, Liam. Link's going to be killed tomorrow if I can't fix things. If he's killed...I won't be able to forgive myself or anyone in my family," she sat up, looking to Liam.
When the knight failed to say anything, she pushed herself off her bed, walking to her window to look over the cruel world she found herself living around.
"I'm sorry I took my own pain out on you. I want to be both your knight and your friend, but all together, I want to be someone you can turn to for help. No matter what it is you need, I want to help," he approached (Y/n), turning her around and being her into a conforming embrace.
There was a moment of silence, the only sound coming from the two's breaths. Liam pulled away, remembering that it wasn't his place to comfort (Y/n) that way. It didn't matter how long he wanted to hold the princess in his arms, telling her he was there for her. It was Link she loved. Whether the Hylian was there or not, Liam could never take his place.
"...If you want to help, then help me get Link out of the castle. There's no hope in convincing anyone to willingly let him go, but if he gets away, then they won't be able to stop him," (Y/n) whispered.
"I could do that," Liam whispered himself, nodding slowly," Camron has all the keys to the dungeon cells and their chains. I could ask for them, making up some excuse for it. But then what? We wouldn't be able to simply walk out the front doors."
"The back of the castle. Farthest corner to the right side. I thought of it once...Whenever the clock hit's an hour, the guards which places. I've watched a few times, on restless nights. It takes a while longer, about a five-seven minute gap. I was thinking, if I somehow got the keys, we'd be able to go that way."
Liam nodded," then we'd have to move fast. After dinner, I'll get the keys and grab some of my old clothes. Link could wear those so that, if we're seen from a distance inside the castle, no one will think too much of it. Will you be wanting to see him once more before we reach the outer wall?"
(Y/n) bit her lower lip, hesitating for a moment," actually...I was planning on going with him. I can't stay in this castle, not if I can't see Link or ever leave again. My father plans to keep me in a cage as some pitiful pawn that will someday play to his own use. I refuse that life. I don't care if I'm homeless or outcasted. I'll happily be anything other than my father's pawn..."
Liam's green eyes held many emotions. From shock to pain; it almost looked like he'd start crying. With (y/n) leaving, the chances of seeing her again were slim. The love of his life could be gone forever. At the same time, he had to ask himself whether he wanted to be able to look at a sad but beautiful girl every day, or never see her again while also knowing she's happy somewhere else.
"Alright. The two of us will meet you near the outer wall corner after ten o'clock. Head out at that time. If you can't make it, wait until eleven. Just don't be caught."
(Y/n) stared at the taller male for a moment, slowly nodding while a thankful smile made its way onto her lips," thank you...Thank you so much, Liam!"
"Of course," Liam returned the smile the best he could," we'll see you then."
The second he entered the hallways, shutting the door behind him, his heart began to ack. He had loved (Y/n) ever since he was six. The only reason he became so dedicated to becoming a knight of honor wasn't because his father was one, but because he had the chance of being her knight.
He didn't know what he was planning then. Maybe, in his young mind, he thought that becoming the Princess's knight was the first step to winning her heart. He thought that maybe, just maybe, she'd end up having the same feelings towards him that he did her.
Ever since he was a kid, the day he saw her cry for a protector, he decided to risk it all so that he'd hopefully hear the words 'I love you' from her. He did end up hearing those words, but they were never directed towards him.
Liam wasn't an idiot. From day one, he saw the look in (Y/n)'s eyes when they set on Link. They were filled with admiration, affection, compassion...they never looked like that when she looked at her knight. It was okay, though. From what he noticed, Link's eyes always showed the same emotion. (Y/n) loved him and he loved her. All Liam asked was that, if the Hylian was to win her heart in the end, he'd treat the Princess like the beautiful goddess she was.
