Still Water

The air was calm, and the girl in the green dress walked slowly from the hospital. She didn’t know what was happening to her, she just knew that she had hurt someone. Apparently, according to the doctors and the police officers, someone had died, and one angry doctor said it was her fault, but how could she, an eight year old girl who never knew her real parents, possibly kill someone. She didn’t know what they were talking about, she just knew she had to get back to her mother and father, and they would help her find her little sister.

She looked down at her stained green dress, and no matter how hard she tried, the blood wouldn’t come out. She suddenly started crying. She didn’t know why, but suddenly her vision became blurred with tears and her mind became scattered. The girl fell to her knees, landing in a river of water that glowed blue in the pale moonlight. She stared at her reflection in the running water. She held out her hand and the river stopped, making the reflection crystal clear. Her short white hair slowly waved side to side with a sudden gust of wind, covering one of her eyes.

“Don’t you remember?” a voice said from behind her.

She turned and saw the angry doctor, pale and limp, wobbling towards her.

    “N-No… I don’t remember hurting anyone…”

He sighed and sat by the water, next to her. “I don’t remember much after I passed out. Most of what I remember was you standing and waving your hands through the air, and blood flying everywhere.”

She looked at her reflection in the running water. “Red water…”

He stood up suddenly and stepped back, staring at her in fear. “Woah, don’t say that.”

She looked back at him, still crying. “I’m Erza. What’s your name?”

He tilted his head. “Well, I’m sorry, but I’m not gonna tell you. You really shouldn’t know, I don’t like this kind of black magic.”

She nodded. “It’s okay to be shy, sir. I understand,” she looked back and the water stopped again, showing her perfect reflection.

The man stood back slightly, seeing the unnaturally flowing water sent a chill up his spine. He shrugged it off and sat back down. “I’m not shy, darling. I’m just-”

“Afraid… of me…” she said in a low voice, tears fell against the water, not causing a single ripple in the water, just rolling off the surface.

He sighed. “Yeah. You understand, right? My partner just died from a mild hand wound that made him bleed out, because of you.”

She cried more, sobbing as tears hit the solid surface of the water. She turned and looked up at him as tears streamed down her face. “It wasn’t me…”

He looked her dead in the eyes. The unusual happiness wasn’t there as he saw it before. He slowly inched closer and hugged her. “I believe you.”

She sobbed into his shoulder. She didn’t care if he believed her or not, all she needed right now was a hug. “I lost my sister…”

He pulled away and looked into her eyes. “Was she in that house with you? You said that you killed your parents there, if she was there too…”

She looked up to him and shook her head. “No… Faith wasn’t there. She was adopted by someone else, but mom and dad were gonna help me find her. W-Without them…” she broke down into tears again, rushing into him and hugging him tightly.

He gently rubbed her back. “It’s okay Erza. I’ll help you find her.”

She rubbed her eyes and nose, looking up at him. “T-Thank you…”
