After his sister had died, he had fallen into a sad space, depression. It wasn't as bad as some cases, moderate depression, not too severe, but it was still depression. On top of his sister dying, his parents had gotten a divorce, and he blamed it on himself. His mother couldn't even look at him for heaven's sake! She just gave him anti-depressants prescribed by the doctor and left him alone.
Sitting at his desk, he blocked out the world, wishing he could shut off reality. Soon, the bell rang for lunch, and the boy slipped out of the classroom.
Stopping at his locker, he grabbed his paper lunch bag, and headed towards the cafeteria. He sat at the round table, closest to the window, alone. No one ever bothered to sit with him, not since Em died. Not since he smiled.
But today a girl sat down.
