Patrick fiddled with his bowtie as he waited at a table set for two. It wasn't too fancy of a place, but Patrick had dressed in a red short sleeve, collared shirt under a black sweater vest. He had considered pulling out his devil costume from last year, but he had decided on his current outfit at the last minute.
He looked at his drink, watching droplets of water race down the side. Ryan and Breezy had set up a two part date that would bleed over into their anniversary. Breezy had planned the dinner reservations and Ryan had kept the second half a secret... Which was slightly terrifying.
"Hey, Punk, room for two?"
Patrick looked up, immediately feeling a smile grow on his face. Pete was wearing all black. He also had a smile on his face.
"Long time no see." Patrick nodded as he gestured to the seat across from him. "I've missed you."
"I'm sorry." Pete pulled out his chair, but quickly moved around the table to place a kiss against Patrick's cheek. "There's been so much happening with this project I've been working on."
"Big writing deal?" Patrick asked.
"Hm?" Pete looked up at Patrick. "Oh! Oh, yea. Hoping to make a deal."
"Exciting!" Patrick continued to smile, "I just wish it didn't keep you away so often."
Pete smiled, but there was a twinge of sadness to it. "Me too."
A server wandered over just then. Both men placed their orders before the server was off again. Patrick turned to talk to Pete, but he was on his phone. Patrick turned back to his glass.
They sat in silence for awhile. Patrick didn't know what to say or where to start. Usually, silence was comfortable between them. Righg now, it just felt a bit awkward.
Patrick sighed. Without looking away from his glass, he slipped his phone from his pocket, unlocked the screen, and typed a message.
Soulofapunk~ hey, look up from your phone
It took a moment before Pete responded. "Oh shit, sorry, Punk."
"Just... Talk to me!" Patrick brought his smile back to his lips. "It's practically our anniversary, meme boy."
Pete laughed, setting his phone face down on the table. "Can you believe it's really been a year?" He smiled affectionately at Patrick. "I'm the luckiest man in the world."
"That makes two of us."
It grew quiet again. Patrick was going over what he should say next, but Pete was back on his phone before he got the chance. Patrick tried to hide his disappointment, though it wasn't like Pete was paying attention.
The server dropped of their food shortly after. Patrick poked at his salad while Pete barely touched his food at all.
Patrick pushed his chair away from the table. "I should call Ryan to figure out what comes next." He declared, not looking at Pete.
"Oh... Okay."
Patrick moved across the restaurant floor towards the bathroom. He already had his phone in hand as he pushed open the swinging door.
Soulofapunk~ Ryan?
PuppyRoss~ I have been summoned
PuppyRoss~ why aren't you dating it up? The assassin is doing fine
Soulofapunk~ it's going fine we're just done with dinner...
PuppyRoss~ why didn't you say so!? Your chofer awaits you outside
Soulofapunk~ what did you do!?
PuppyRoss~ you'll see
PuppyRoss~ :)
Patrick bit the inside of his lip. With Ryan, that could mean anything.
He stepped back out into the restaurant to find Pete still on his phone with worry etched into his features.
"Hey." Patrick spoke quietly as he set some money on the table for their server, "Our ride is waiting, apparently."
Pete looked up, wiping any evidence of concern on his face with the motion. "Okay, cool." He stood up and grasped Patrick's hand in his own.
The gesture made Patrick smile, but he still had a strange feeling in his gut. He wasn't sure why... Pete was just so distracted tonight. He was usually only ever glued to his phone when the group chat was going strong, but it was quiet tonight.
The two walked out of the restaurant and immediately stopped dead in their tracks. Pete burst into amazed laughter, while Patrick's jaw just dropped.
A black hurst was parked right outside of the front doors. A driver, decorated as a skeleton, stood beside it, holding a sign that said their names on it in blood red ink.
"Holy shit, those two have outdone themselves!" Pete exclaimed. He pulled Patrick over to the vehicle.
Patrick laughed in agreement. This Pete. This felt like Pete. He was acting more himself.
"This is everything I've ever dreamed of!" Pete laughed again, "This thing is taking us to a freaking haunted house!"
"Oh, wow!"
Pete grinned. "Ready to get spooky?"
Patrick grinned back. "So ready." He responded before leaning to kiss Pete.
