Patrick sat with his legs crisscrossed on the bed, looking at Pete who was leaning against the headboard. It was a quarter after one in the morning and Patrick had sobered up. Since he woke up to Pete awake as well, they had decided to talk.
"Even when she came, it was just a paternaty test?" Patrick asked.
Pete nodded. "Yes. We didn't fool around, it was just that. Trying to figure out answers."
"And answers came the night we were celebrating our anniversary." Patrick added quietly. It explained why Pete had been so glued to his phone...
"I'm so sorry, Patrick." Pete pushed away from the headboard and scooted towards his husband. "I know I should have told you. I shouldn't have kept it from you at all." He reached out to take Patrick's hand, "I was just so scared."
Patrick let his hand sit limply in Pete's grip. "I know... It just hurts." He avoided looking at Pete. "We're raising a daughter of our own, Pete. If we can't be open about things from our past that may come back to haunt us..."
"I never would have thought she could get pregnant!" Pete exclaimed, "Then when she got ahold of me, I freaked out. I didn't tell anyone."
"I know." Patrick whispered, still keeping his eyes away from Pete.
"Patrick..." Pete's voice cracked.
Patrick finally turned to him. His eyes were watery. "Pete, it's okay." Patrick soothed, reaching out to cup the other man's face and slide his thumb back and forth along his cheek. "I'll get over it. Right now, though, it just hurts, okay?"
"I fucked up." Pete said, blinking back tears. "I don't know how to do any of this. Be a dad. Be a good partner. You're always there and I take something like this on by myself."
"You said it yourself, you were scared." Patrick replied, "We'll work through it. Our baby loves you and I love you. You're not the only fuck up around here." He smiled weakly at Pete.
Pete leaned into Patrick's eyes, remaining silent except for soft sniffles.
"Get some sleep." Patrick soothed.
Eventually Pete was laying down beside Patrick. It took a bit longer for his breathing to settle, but it eventually did.
Patrick moved slowly to avoid disturbing Pete. He slipped out of the bedroom and into the living room. He sat down on the couch, bringing his knees to his chest. His major worry was gone, replaced by hurt and gentler questions. This time at night wasn't right to answer them, however, and Pete was already upset.
Patrick wasn't sure when he fell asleep but, when he woke up, a blanket had been draped over him and a muffin sat on the small coffee table in front of him.
